Building a DIY Antenna for the ATS Mini V4 on a Budget
Why DIY Over Buying
A basic wire antenna genuinely costs almost nothing and can outperform the stock telescopic whip for shortwave reception — this is one of the best cost-to-benefit upgrades available for this receiver, and it's a classic beginner shortwave listening project in its own right.
Simplest Option: Random Longwire
Materials: any length of insulated wire (25-50ft is a reasonable starting range — longer generally helps SW reception up to a point, with diminishing/complicated returns beyond that), an appropriate connector/adapter to interface with your receiver's antenna input (confirm the exact connector type on your specific unit first), and something to anchor the far end (a tree branch, a fence post, anything that lets you run the wire outdoors or at least away from indoor electrical noise).
- Strip a bit of insulation off one end of the wire, connect to your antenna adapter.
- Run the wire outdoors if at all possible — even a modest run outside dramatically outperforms the same length strung indoors, where household electronics (LED lighting, switching power supplies, WiFi routers) generate significant RF noise that swamps weak signals.
- Higher and further from noise sources is better, but don't overthink initial placement — even a mediocre longwire outdoors beats a great one stuck in a noisy indoor environment.
Improving It: Add a Ground
A genuine earth ground connection (a metal stake driven into soil, wired back to the receiver's ground reference if your antenna adapter provides one) measurably reduces noise and improves weak-signal pickup on longwire setups — a cheap, high-value addition once the basic wire is up and working.
Indoor-Only Option: Loop Antenna
If running a wire outdoors genuinely isn't possible (apartment living, HOA restrictions, etc.), a simple loop antenna — wire wound in a large loop shape (a few feet in diameter), connected via an appropriate matching setup — performs noticeably better than a random wire strung indoors, and offers the bonus of directional nulling (rotate the loop to null out a specific noise source or interfering station).
Noise-Hunting Before You Build Anything
Before investing effort in a bigger antenna, walk your ATS Mini around your home with just the stock whip and listen for where indoor RF noise is worst (near routers, LED dimmers, phone chargers) — placing your DIY antenna's actual receiver location away from these sources often matters as much as the antenna design itself.
A Genuinely Free Test

Realistic Expectations
A DIY wire antenna is a genuine upgrade over the stock whip for SW/SSB weak-signal work, but it won't match a dedicated active loop antenna (MLA-30 class) or a properly engineered longwire with real ground system — it's the right first step for near-zero cost, not necessarily the final upgrade if you get seriously into DXing.
