DTF and UV DTF Transfers for Makers: Printers, Films, Powder, and Application
Between our existing vinyl cutting and dye sublimation coverage sits a technique that's become genuinely popular in the custom-apparel and promotional-product space: DTF (direct-to-film) and UV DTF transfers. Unlike sublimation, which only works on polyester and light colors, DTF prints full-color designs onto a film that transfers to almost any fabric, in any color, including cotton — and UV DTF extends the same basic idea to hard surfaces like tumblers, phone cases, and signage, competing directly with laser engraving and vinyl for that market. This guide covers both processes, the equipment involved, and where they fit against techniques this site already covers.
DTF (Direct-to-Film) for Apparel
DTF prints a full-color, often photographic design using a specialized printer with white ink capability onto a PET film, applies a hot-melt adhesive powder while the ink is still wet, cures the powder, and then heat-presses the finished transfer onto the garment. The finished transfer sits on top of the fabric as a flexible, durable film layer rather than penetrating the fibers the way sublimation does.

- Printer: either a purpose-built DTF printer (Epson-based print heads with white ink channels are standard) or a converted desktop Epson inkjet with aftermarket bulk ink and white ink capability — the conversion route is cheaper to start but less reliable long-term than a purpose-built unit.
- DTF film: PET film, printed with the design mirrored (since it transfers reversed), white ink layer printed last (on top of the CMYK layer as it comes off the print head, which ends up as the base layer against the fabric after transfer).
- Powder application: hot-melt adhesive powder applied evenly over the wet ink — either by hand-shaking over a catch tray or with a dedicated powder shaker unit for volume work — then excess powder is shaken off before curing.
- Curing: a heat press in "kiss" (non-contact) mode, a curing oven, or a conveyor dryer melts the powder into a solid, transferable film without pressing it onto anything yet.
- Application: heat press the cured film onto the garment at typically 300-320°F for 10-15 seconds with firm pressure, then cold-peel the film backing once it's fully cooled — peeling warm is the most common cause of poor transfer.
UV DTF for Hard Surfaces
UV DTF uses a UV printer instead of an inkjet, curing the ink instantly with UV LEDs rather than using heat-activated powder, and produces a transfer with its own adhesive layer that can be applied cold, by hand, with a squeegee — no heat press required. This is what makes it viable for surfaces that can't take heat: tumblers, phone cases, glass, and painted or powder-coated metal, putting it in direct competition with laser engraving and marking-compound methods covered in our tumbler engraving guide and glass and ceramic engraving guide for the same product categories.
The practical trade-off versus laser engraving: UV DTF gives you full color and photographic detail that engraving can't match, but it's a surface-applied sticker-like layer rather than a permanent mark in the material — it can be peeled, scratched, or eventually wear off with heavy use or dishwashing, where a laser-engraved mark is permanent. For full-color designs on curved drinkware where permanence matters less than visual impact, UV DTF fills a real gap the site's engraving content doesn't cover.
Safety and Ventilation
DTF powder is a fine particulate — treat curing and powder-shaking the same way you'd treat any fine-dust process, with a properly fitted respirator (see our respirator guide) and a dedicated, ventilated area for the powder-shaking step specifically, since loose adhesive powder becomes airborne easily and accumulates on nearby surfaces if it isn't contained. UV printer ink and UV DTF adhesive layers involve uncured photoinitiator chemistry before curing — avoid skin contact with wet ink and cure fully before handling, following the same general chemical-handling caution covered in our chemical storage safety guide. Heat presses used for DTF application carry the same burn and fire risks as any heat press — keep a fire extinguisher rated for the job nearby and never leave a heat press unattended while heated.
Where DTF Fits in a Maker Shop
DTF makes the most sense if you're doing apparel work across mixed fabric types and colors where sublimation's polyester-only limitation is a dealbreaker, or if photo-realistic full-color designs rule out vinyl. UV DTF is worth adding alongside a laser if you want full-color options on drinkware and hard goods without buying a second laser or investing in dye-sublimation blanks. Neither replaces the other techniques already covered on this site — they fill the specific gap of full-color, any-substrate transfer work that sublimation and vinyl can't reach and that engraving handles differently (permanent mark, no color).
