Pocket-hole screws and biscuits cover a lot of joinery needs in a maker shop, but neither one produces a true structural mortise-and-tenon-strength joint without visible fasteners or a plate that only resists shear in one direction well. Loose-tenon joinery — best known through the Festool Domino system, but achievable with router jigs and shop-made methods too — splits the difference: it's as fast to execute as biscuit joinery but produces a joint with genuine mortise-and-tenon strength, because the "tenon" is a separate floating piece of wood glued into matching mortises cut in both parts. How Loose-Tenon Joinery Works

DIY Alternatives: Router Jig Method

You can produce genuinely comparable loose-tenon joints with a plunge router, a straight bit, and either a shop-made or commercial mortising jig (Rockler, Leigh, and several shop-built designs are well documented online) for a fraction of the Domino's cost — the trade is setup time per joint rather than the near-instant repeatability of a dedicated tool.

  1. Mark reference faces on both mating pieces and keep them registered against the jig consistently — this is the step that determines whether your joints line up
  2. Set the router's plunge depth for your target mortise depth, typically half the tenon's total length on each side plus a small glue-relief gap at the bottom
  3. Clamp the jig to the workpiece, plunge and rout the mortise slot, working from the center outward in shallow passes rather than one deep plunge
  4. Repeat on the mating piece, keeping the same reference-face orientation
  5. Mill or buy loose tenon stock sized to fit your mortise width with a light friction fit — not so tight that you can't get glue coverage when you insert it

Shop-Made Loose Tenon Stock

Commercial Domino tenons are sold pre-milled in beech, but you can mill your own from scrap on a table saw and router table (or a thickness planer for the width dimension) — round over the edges slightly with sandpaper or a small roundover bit so the tenon seats fully into the rounded ends of a router-cut mortise, and cut it a hair shorter than the combined mortise depth of both pieces so there's room for excess glue to escape rather than hydraulic-locking the joint before it's fully seated.

When to Reach for Loose-Tenon Joinery

It earns its place on structural joints that need to resist racking and repeated stress — table and chair leg-to-rail connections, face frame assemblies, cabinet carcasses that will see real load over years of use. For purely decorative panel assembly or anything that isn't structurally loaded, biscuits or pocket screws are faster and perfectly adequate; save the extra setup time (and tool investment, if you're going the Domino route) for joints where the strength actually matters.

Combining with CNC or Laser-Cut Parts

If you're building furniture with a mix of hand-joined solid wood and CNC-routed or laser-cut parts, loose-tenon joints are a clean way to attach a solid wood frame to a sheet-good panel — cut the mortises in the solid wood by hand or Domino, and have your CNC router cut matching mortise slots into the sheet good as part of the same toolpath file that cuts the panel's outline, keeping everything registered to the same digital model instead of hand-transferring measurements between processes.

Safety Notes

A plunge router or Domino tool is a two-handed operation — keep the workpiece clamped securely rather than hand-held whenever the jig setup allows it, and never reach toward the bit or cutter while it's spinning down after a cut. Router bits and Domino cutters throw fine wood chips and dust; eye protection and a shop vac or dust extraction attached to the tool are worth using every time, not just on dusty days.
