Pricing Your Maker Work: Machine-Hour, Material, and Labor Cost Calculations for Custom Jobs

Material Cost: Count the Waste
Filament and sheet stock cost calculations routinely undercount because they price only the part that ends up in the finished piece:
- 3D printing: include support material weight, purge tower volume on multi-color jobs, and a realistic failure rate (5-10% for anything unattended is common) amortized across successful jobs.

Platform and Payment Fees
If you're selling through Etsy, a marketplace, or accepting card payments, factor the actual fee percentage into your overhead calculation rather than treating it as an afterthought that eats into margin after the sale — a 6-9% combined platform-and-payment-processing cut on top of everything else is common and needs to be priced in up front, not discovered after your first month of sales.
A Simple Rule for Getting Started
If you don't yet have real numbers for your machine-hour cost, a reasonable starting formula while you gather that data is: (material cost × 2) + (total time in hours × your target hourly rate), then round to a sensible price point. It's a rough approximation, not a substitute for the full calculation above, but it's better than pricing purely on gut feel or by copying a competitor's listed price without knowing their actual costs.
The point of doing this math isn't to squeeze every job for maximum margin — it's to know, with actual numbers, whether a given price covers your real costs or is quietly subsidized by treating your own time and machine wear as free.
