Wolfpawn 4040 Pro — Material Settings Reference

Desktop CNC router. 400 × 400 mm work area. 300W brushless spindle. Signs, functional parts, joinery, relief carving, the 200-peak project.

Hardware Specs

  • Work area: 400 × 400 × 90 mm (Z clearance)
  • Spindle: 300W brushless, ER11 collet, max 10,000 RPM
  • Controller: GRBL | Software: Vectric Aspire + UGS
  • Frame: 40×40 aluminum extrusion, relatively rigid for size
  • Supported collets: ER11 — 1/8" (3.175 mm) standard, 1/4" (6.35 mm) with adapter

⚠️ Safety — Always

  • Eye protection — flying chips, always
  • Hearing protection — spindle + router is loud
  • Dust collection / shop vac — wood dust is carcinogenic, MDF is worse
  • Workholding first — workpiece must not move. Tabs, clamps, double-sided tape, or fixture
  • Never leave unattended — watch first passes especially
  • Feeds/speeds are starting points — test on scrap first every time

Rule of thumb: Single flute = better chip clearing on softer materials. Two flute = smoother finish on hardwood.

Notes: Pine is easy but resinous — clogs bits over time. Clean with bit cleaner spray. Knots are hard spots — slow down before hitting them. Poplar is the smoothest softwood to machine.

Notes:

  • Oak: Hard and stringy — sharp bit essential. 700 mm/min max to start.
  • Walnut: Machines beautifully. 800 mm/min comfortable.
  • Maple: Dense and hard — slow down 20% vs walnut. Keep bits sharp.
  • Cherry: Similar to walnut. Tearout possible — downcut on final pass top surface.
  • Multiple light passes beat one deep pass every time on hardwood.

⚠️ Note: 300W spindle is marginal for aluminum. Possible but requires very conservative settings, sharp bits, and patience. No coolant = dry cutting only, small chips.

Notes:

  • Air blast on chips is critical — recutting chips = instant bit failure
  • WD-40 as cutting lubricant helps significantly
  • Machine in very small DOC/WOC passes
  • Signs of trouble: squealing, smoke, discoloration — back off immediately
  • 6061 is most machinable aluminum alloy

WORKHOLDING STRATEGIES

  • Double-sided tape — foam tape for soft materials, carpet tape for hard
  • Clamps — T-track clamps on spoilboard, stay out of toolpath
  • Vacuum fixture — not available, tape is your friend
  • Tabs — always on through cuts, even if annoying to remove
  • Wasteboard screws — #8 screws through material into spoilboard (MDF-backed parts)
  • Spoilboard: Resurface periodically — flat spoilboard = accurate Z depth

Maintenance

  • Collet clean: IPA wipe after every session, check for chips inside
  • Rails/lead screws: Wipe and light lube (PTFE) weekly
  • Spindle: Check for wobble monthly — ER11 collet wears
  • Tramming: Check squareness of spindle to bed every few months
  • Bits: Inspect under magnification — carbide shows wear quickly
