Workshop — PPE and Safety Quick Reference
PPE by Machine
| Machine | Eyes | Ears | Lungs | Hands |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FDM 3D Printer | — | — | Ventilate (ABS/ASA = toxic) | — |
| Laser Engraver | OD5+ laser goggles (wavelength-matched) | — | Air filter or exhaust | — |
| CNC Router | Safety glasses | 30dB earplugs | N95 minimum | No gloves |
| Angle grinder | Face shield + glasses | Earplugs | N95 | Leather gloves |
| Soldering | Safety glasses | — | Fume extractor | — |
Laser Safety — Non-negotiable
- OD rating must match wavelength. Ray5 20W is 450nm blue — need OD5+ at 450nm
- Never engrave PVC or vinyl — produces HCl gas (toxic)
- Never run without exhaust or filtration
- Never leave unattended
- Keep fire extinguisher within reach
- Wood and leather fires are the most common laser accident
CNC Router Safety
- No gloves at the spindle — gloves catch and pull into the bit
- Let spindle fully stop before reaching in
- Secure workpiece with clamps, not hands
- Stand to the side — bits break and eject forward
3D Printer Fume Risk
| Material | Risk | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|
| PLA | Low | Good ventilation |
| PETG | Low-moderate | Ventilate |
| ABS | High (styrene) | HEPA + carbon filter |
| ASA | High | Same as ABS |
| Nylon | High | Filter or exhaust |
| Carbon fiber | High (particles) | N95 P100, sealed printer |
Fire Extinguisher Types
| Type | Use for |
|---|---|
| ABC dry chemical | Wood, paper, electrical, flammable liquids |
| CO2 | Electronics, clean rooms |
ABC is the best general shop choice.
