- Know how to use it before you need to — the standard PASS method (Pull the pin, Aim at the base of the fire, Squeeze the handle, Sweep side to side) takes 30 seconds to learn and is worth actually practicing mentally rather than reading it for the first time during an emergency
Smoke Detection Matters As Much As Extinguishers
A working smoke detector in the shop space — genuinely working, tested, not just present — is what gives you the early warning to actually use the extinguisher before a fire grows beyond what a hand extinguisher can handle. 3D printers and laser cutters running unattended for hours are exactly the scenario where early smoke detection, not just having an extinguisher, is what prevents a small problem from becoming a serious one.
None of this is about being alarmist — a shop full of powered electronics, batteries charging, and equipment sometimes left running unattended has real fire risk, and the fix is genuinely cheap and simple: the right extinguishers, in the right spots, actually maintained.
