Shop Safety: Ventilation, Fire, PPE Across All Machines
This Isn't Optional Reading
Every one of these tools — 3D printer, laser, CNC — has a genuine, well-documented injury/fire risk when safety basics are skipped. This guide covers the baseline that applies across all of them; check each tool's own guide for machine-specific details.
Ventilation
- 3D printing (especially ABS/ASA): produces ultrafine particles and VOCs — an enclosure with active carbon filtration, or printing in a well-ventilated space, isn't optional for regular use. PLA is comparatively low-emission but not zero.
- Laser: cutting/engraving produces smoke and, depending on material, genuinely toxic fumes (never cut PVC — it releases chlorine gas). Real ducted ventilation to outside air, not just a carbon filter recirculating indoors, is the right standard for anything beyond occasional light engraving.
- CNC: fine dust, especially from MDF, is a respiratory hazard with cumulative long-term risk — dust collection at the source (not just a shop vac after the fact) plus a respirator rated for fine particulates (N95 minimum, P100 for extended MDF work) matters.
Fire Safety
- A Class ABC fire extinguisher within arm's reach of every machine, not one extinguisher for the whole shop across the room — seconds matter.
- Never leave a 3D printer running unattended overnight without either a fire-rated enclosure or a smoke detector directly above it — this is the single most common source of "3D printer burned down the garage" stories, and it's genuinely preventable.
- Laser cutting is a live fire risk on flammable materials (wood, some plastics) — never walk away mid-cut, and know your material's ignition behavior before running an unattended job.
- Keep a working smoke detector in the shop space specifically, tested regularly — not just relying on a whole-house detector that might be too far away/too insensitive to catch a small shop fire early.
PPE Baseline
- Eye protection: laser-specific safety glasses rated for your laser's exact wavelength (generic safety glasses do NOT block laser wavelengths — this is a real and serious gap) for laser work; standard safety glasses for CNC.
- Hearing protection: CNC routing is genuinely loud over extended sessions — earplugs/muffs for anything beyond quick jobs.
- Respiratory: covered above per-tool, but keep a properly-fitted respirator on hand as shop standard equipment, not an afterthought.
Electrical Safety
- Don't daisy-chain power strips for high-draw tools (CNC spindles, laser power supplies) — check actual amperage draw against your circuit's rating, and use dedicated circuits for anything drawing serious current (see the 240V shop wiring guide).
- GFCI protection anywhere near water/coolant use (some CNC setups use flood coolant) is a genuine electrocution-prevention measure, not a nice-to-have.
The One-Sentence Version
Ventilate for what you're actually producing (particles, fumes, or dust — check which), keep fire suppression within reach at every station, and match your PPE to the specific hazard of the tool you're running, not a generic "safety glasses on" habit that misses laser-specific wavelength protection or respirator-grade dust filtration.
