Comms: Private Chat, Voice and Video That Forgets Everything
Comms is live. It is a private chat app with text, voice and video that runs in your browser and installs to your phone like an app. You can jump in as a guest with no account, or sign in with your 1c3d.com login for a few extras.
The short version
- End-to-end encrypted. Messages are locked on your device and only the people in the chat can unlock them. Our server only passes scrambled data along.
- Nothing is saved. There is no history on our side and no message logs. When everyone leaves a chat, it is gone.
- No account needed. Guests get a random name and can chat, call, and send files right away.
What you can do
- #general. One public room, open to everyone who is online.
- Private groups. Make a group, share the invite code or link, and only people with it can read the chat. Groups vanish when the last person leaves.
- Direct messages by consent. A first message is only a request. Nothing is exchanged until the other person accepts. Chats end and are erased when either side goes offline for good, with a short grace period if a phone just fell asleep.
- Voice and video. One-to-one calls and group calls, encrypted between devices.
- Send files device to device. Photos, videos, PDFs and zips go straight from one device to the other and never sit on our server. Up to 100 MB per file (25 MB for guests). In a group, a share shows up as a card with a thumbnail and everyone present can choose to save it. People who join later never see it. Members can also send pictures and videos as view once: press and hold to look, let go and it is gone.
- Control. Members can go invisible or set Busy, turn on Privacy blur to hide the chat when you switch away, add an app lock passcode, and use a quotes-page disguise mode.
How private is it, really?
Each session makes its own encryption keys when you open the app. Direct messages and group chats use keys only the people inside them hold, and members can compare key fingerprints to check they are talking to the right person. Files never touch our server, and if a strict network blocks a direct connection, the encrypted data can pass through a relay as a last resort. The relay cannot read it.
Here is what it does not do. No app can stop someone taking a screenshot or photographing their screen, and Comms cannot reliably tell you when that happens. A hacked phone or computer defeats any app. And the relay can see that a connection exists and from which network address, unless you are a member who has turned on invisible mode. #general is an open room, so treat it like a public one.
Try it
- Open 1c3d.com/comms on your phone or computer. A short guide pops up the first time.
- Pick #general, or make a private group and send the invite to a friend.
- On a phone, use your browser's Add to Home Screen to install it.
It is new, so expect rough edges. Tell us what breaks or what you want next in the forum.
