Wolfpawn 4040 Pro — Material Settings Reference Desktop CNC router. 400 × 400 mm work area. 300W brushless spindle. Signs, functional parts, joinery, relief carving, the 200-peak project. Hardware Specs Work area: 400 × 400 × 90 mm (Z clearance) Spindle: 300W brushless, ER11 collet, max 10,000 RPM Controller: GRBL | Software: Vectric Aspire + UGS Frame: 40×40 aluminum extrusion, relatively rigid for size Supported collets: ER11 — 1/8" (3.175 mm) standard, 1/4" (6.35 mm) with adapter -- ⚠️ Safety — Always Eye protection — flying chips, always Hearing protection — spindle + router is loud Dust collection / shop vac — wood dust is carcinogenic, MDF is worse Workholding first — workpiece must not move. Tabs, clamps, double-sided tape, or fixture Never leave unattended — watch first passes especially Feeds/speeds are starting points — test on scrap first every time -- TOOLING REFERENCE Common Bit Types Rule of thumb: Single flute = better chip clearing on softer materials. Two flute = smoother finish on hardwood. -- SOFTWOOD (Pine, Cedar, Poplar) Profile / Pocket Cutting Surfacing / Facing Notes: Pine is easy but resinous — clogs bits over time. Clean with bit cleaner spray. Knots are hard spots — slow down before hitting them. Poplar is the smoothest softwood to machine. -- HARDWOOD (Oak, Walnut, Maple, Cherry, Ash) Profile / Pocket Finishing Pass Notes: Oak: Hard and stringy — sharp bit essential. 700 mm/min max to start. Walnut: Machines beautifully. 800 mm/min comfortable. Maple: Dense and hard — slow down 20% vs walnut. Keep bits sharp. Cherry: Similar to walnut. Tearout possible — downcut on final pass top surface. Multiple light passes beat one deep pass every time on hardwood. -- PLYWOOD Baltic Birch / Hardwood Ply Notes: Compression bit essential for clean top and bottom surfaces. Upcut alone tears top veneer. Tabs every 100 mm on cutouts or parts fly. Climb cut final pass for smooth edges. -- MDF Profile / Pocket Notes: Feeds fast and clean but fine dust is toxic — serious vacuum required, ideally with HEPA. Bits dull faster in MDF than real wood. No tearout issues. Great for painted signs and jigs. -- SOFTBOARD / FOAM (Tooling Foam, Insulation Foam) XPS Insulation Foam Tooling Board / Renshape -- PLASTICS HDPE / UHMWPE Notes: HDPE machines great — almost no tearout. Keep RPM moderate, feeds fast. Chips clear easily. Good for jigs, fixtures, wear pads. Polypropylene (PP) Delrin / POM Acetal Notes: Excellent machinability, tight tolerances possible. Use for precision parts, bushings, gears. Acrylic (Cast) Notes: Acrylic chips rather than cuts — keep feed moderate. Too slow = melts. Too fast = chips/shatters. O-flute single recommended. Cast acrylic > extruded for clean edges. Aluminum Composite (Dibond / ACM) Notes: ACM machines very well on desktop CNC. The 0.3 mm aluminum skins cut cleanly. Good for signs. No coolant needed. -- ALUMINUM (6061) ⚠️ Note: 300W spindle is marginal for aluminum. Possible but requires very conservative settings, sharp bits, and patience. No coolant = dry cutting only, small chips. Notes: Air blast on chips is critical — recutting chips = instant bit failure WD-40 as cutting lubricant helps significantly Machine in very small DOC/WOC passes Signs of trouble: squealing, smoke, discoloration — back off immediately 6061 is most machinable aluminum alloy -- V-CARVING (Signs & Text) Softwood / MDF Hardwood Notes: V-carve depth is controlled by vector width — Vectric Aspire handles this automatically. Flat clearance pass first with pocket, then V-carve detail pass. Sand or chip away fuzzies after. -- 3D RELIEF CARVING Roughing Pass Finishing Pass Notes: Finishing pass stepover = quality vs time tradeoff. 5% = excellent, 10% = visible scallops but fast. Sand after for glassy finish on hardwood. Aspire's 3D toolpath handles this natively. -- THE 200-PEAK PROJECT 200 identical peaks, 45 × 118 mm, solid wood. Key notes: Zero at bottom-left, same stock setup each sheet Use same collet and bit throughout for consistent depth Tabs cut with flush-trim router after — sand edges Keep a cheat sheet by the machine for reset between sheets -- WORKHOLDING STRATEGIES Double-sided tape — foam tape for soft materials, carpet tape for hard Clamps — T-track clamps on spoilboard, stay out of toolpath Vacuum fixture — not available, tape is your friend Tabs — always on through cuts, even if annoying to remove Wasteboard screws — #8 screws through material into spoilboard (MDF-backed parts) Spoilboard: Resurface periodically — flat spoilboard = accurate Z depth -- FEEDS & SPEEDS CHEAT SHEET -- COMMON ISSUES -- Maintenance Collet clean: IPA wipe after every session, check for chips inside Rails/lead screws: Wipe and light lube (PTFE) weekly Spindle: Check for wobble monthly — ER11 collet wears Tramming: Check squareness of spindle to bed every few months Bits: Inspect under magnification — carbide shows wear quickly
