Laser Cutting and Engraving Cork: Coasters, Bulletin Boards, and Wine Stopper Blanks
Cork gets overlooked on most laser cutter material lists because it doesn't fit neatly into "wood" or "foam" — but it cuts and engraves beautifully once you know it behaves like neither. It's soft enough to engrave at very low power, prone to charring further than its actual burn depth suggests, and available in enough forms (sheet cork, cork-rubber composite, cork fabric) that a single settings table won't cover all of it. This is a rundown of what actually works, tuned around a 20W diode machine like the Longer Ray5.
What "Cork" Actually Means for a Laser
- Natural sheet cork (cork underlayment/roll cork): Pure compressed cork granules, usually 1.5-6mm thick. This is what most coaster and bulletin-board projects use. It cuts cleanly and engraves with good contrast.
- Cork-rubber composite: Cork bonded with a synthetic or natural rubber binder, common in gasket-grade cork sheet. The rubber content burns differently than pure cork — expect more smoke, a stronger odor, and less crisp engraving contrast. Treat it as a different material and always re-run a test grid.
- Cork fabric ("cork leather"): A thin cork veneer laminated to a fabric backing, used for wallets, bags, and coasters with a fabric feel. The cork layer is very thin, so cutting settings need to come down significantly from sheet cork or you'll cut straight through the backing and scorch a wide kerf.

Fire Behavior and Ventilation
Cork is more flammable than most people expect, and it smolders rather than flaming out cleanly — a cut edge can hold a visible ember for several seconds after the beam passes, especially on thicker sheet. Don't walk away from a cork job the way you might trust yourself to glance away during an acrylic cut. Keep air assist running for every cut pass (it does double duty here, both improving cut quality and helping blow embers out before they spread), and have your job finish with the machine idle over the cut area for a few seconds rather than immediately opening the lid and introducing a fresh draft of oxygen onto smoldering material. Cork dust and smoke from engraving is also finer and more likely to drift than wood smoke — run your fume extraction or exhaust fan for the whole job, not just the cut passes, and vent to the outside rather than relying on a carbon filter alone for anything beyond light engraving.
Finishing
Cork takes finish differently than wood. A light coat of clear acrylic sealer (spray, not brushed — brushing tends to darken cork unevenly) protects engraved coasters and cork-fabric panels from moisture without changing the color much. For coasters specifically, skip anything that fully seals the surface (like polyurethane) if you want cork to keep its natural moisture-wicking property — a thin wax or light acrylic mist is enough to prevent crumbling at cut edges without turning the coaster into a plastic-coated disc. Sand cut edges very lightly with fine (320-400 grit) sandpaper if you see loose granules after cutting; cork sheet is a compressed, not solid, material and will shed a few loose particles from a freshly cut edge until it's sealed or handled a few times.

Cork's low cost and forgiving cut settings make it a good material to keep on hand for quick jobs: drink coasters (engraved logos or photo-lite designs sell well as small batches), pin-board panels for a shop or office wall, wine and champagne stopper blanks (cut cork discs to size, then hand-shape or turn on a lathe), and cork-fabric wallet or card-holder panels cut and engraved flat before hand assembly. Because cork is inexpensive relative to hardwood or acrylic, it's also a reasonable material to dial in new settings on before committing to a more expensive sheet for a similar design.
