Laser engraving jewelry — rings, pendants, small metal and precious-material pieces — is a different discipline from engraving flat panels. Small work areas, tight tolerances, and often more delicate or reflective materials mean the settings and handling approach genuinely differ from a standard flat engrave. This guide uses a Longer Ray5 20W as the reference machine, but the core technique applies to any diode or CO2 laser with fine enough control.

This is genuinely the hardest part of jewelry engraving, more than any settings question. A ring or pendant that shifts even slightly mid-engrave ruins the piece.
- 3D printed jigs: design a simple holder with a pocket matching your specific piece's shape — even a rough friction-fit cradle dramatically improves consistency over trying to hold something in place with tape

- Low-tack painter's tape + pin registration: for flat pendants, tape the piece down and use small pins or a printed registration jig to prevent any rotation during the engrave

Jewelry pieces are small enough that even a slight focus error covers a meaningful percentage of the whole piece. Always re-check focus distance specifically at the piece's actual surface height, not assumed from a previous larger job — small pieces frequently sit at a different height than your normal engraving bed setup.

Design Considerations for Small Scale
- Minimum text size: below roughly 3-4mm character height, most diode lasers start losing legibility — plan text size accordingly rather than trying to cram a long inscription onto a small band
- Line weight: thin single-line fonts (engraving/script fonts designed for this purpose) hold up much better at small scale than bold sans-serif fonts, which can blob together
- Test at actual size: preview your design printed at 100% scale on paper before engraving — screen zoom levels are deceptive about how small the actual result will read
Finishing
For metal jewelry, a light polish with a jeweler's cloth after engraving brings out contrast between the engraved mark and the surrounding polished surface — the engraved area (whether ablated or marked with compound) usually reads darker/matte against a polished metal background, and that contrast is what actually makes the engraving readable.
Jewelry engraving rewards patience with jigging and test pieces far more than it rewards finding the "perfect" power/speed setting — once a piece is held reliably still and properly focused, the actual engrave settings are usually a small, predictable tweak from your normal material settings.
