Laser Engraving a Guitar: Headstock, Pickguard, and Body Work on the Ray5 20W
Engraving a guitar — headstock, pickguard, body — is one of the most impressive "look what a laser can actually do" projects, and it's genuinely approachable once you understand what surfaces are safe to work on and which settings avoid damaging finishes worth far more than the laser project itself. Reference machine is a Longer Ray5 20W, but the core approach applies to any diode or CO2 laser.
Know What You're Working On Before You Start
This is the one piece of advice that matters more than any setting: a real guitar body or neck is expensive and often irreplaceable in its original condition. Before engraving directly on an instrument you or someone else cares about, understand exactly what finish is on it (nitrocellulose lacquer, polyurethane, satin, raw wood) since that changes both the settings AND whether engraving directly on it is even a good idea versus engraving a separate removable piece.

Headstock Logo/Design Work

- Test your exact settings on a same-finish scrap piece — many guitar builders keep offcut scraps from the same wood/finish batch specifically for this kind of test
- Start well under your expected power and work up gradually — it's far easier to run a second light pass than to undo an overpowered first pass that's cut too deep or scorched the finish
- Clean-coat lacquer finishes generally engrave more predictably than thick polyurethane, which can bubble or melt rather than cleanly ablate if overpowered
Working Around Hardware
Real instruments have pickups, bridges, tuning hardware, and wiring nearby — plan the engrave path to keep the laser head and its full range of motion completely clear of anything metal or anything the laser could accidentally strike. For body engraving specifically, consider whether removing pickups/hardware first is safer than trying to engrave around them in place.
Ventilation and Finish Fumes
Lacquer and polyurethane finishes can produce genuinely unpleasant and potentially harmful fumes when lasered — good ventilation or fume extraction is not optional for this kind of work, more so than for plain wood or leather engraving.
Design Considerations
- Vector line art works better than photo engraves on curved/varnished surfaces — clean line work is more forgiving of minor focus variation across a curved body than a detailed photo-realistic engrave would be
- Test the design at actual scale on paper taped to the instrument before committing — screen previews are misleading about how a design will actually read at real guitar-body size
- Consider a template/jig for repeat work if you're doing this as a service for multiple customers' instruments — a simple registration jig keeps logo placement consistent across different guitars
This project rewards caution more than almost any other laser project on this site, simply because the material cost of a mistake is so much higher than a $2 piece of plywood. Practice thoroughly on scrap and removable parts (pickguards especially) before ever pointing the laser at an instrument's actual body or neck.
