Building a Wooden Longboard Deck: Veneer Lay-Up, Vacuum Press, and CNC Deck Shaping
Building a real wooden longboard deck — the kind with a proper concave, flex pattern, and multi-ply veneer lay-up — combines two skills that don't normally show up in the same project: composite veneer pressing, and CNC shaping. The press gives you the strength and flex characteristics that make a board actually rideable instead of a flat plywood plank; the CNC gives you a repeatable, precise outline and concave that would take hours of hand-shaping to get right, and lets you reproduce the same deck exactly if you want to build more than one. This project builds a vacuum-pressed 7-ply maple deck, shaped and drilled on a desktop CNC router.
Design Approach
A longboard deck is a stack of thin wood veneers (typically 1.5mm hard maple, 7 or 9 plies) glued with the grain direction alternating between layers, exactly like plywood but built up yourself so you control the layer count, species, and flex tune. The stack gets pressed into a curved shape — a mold with the desired concave and camber profile — while the glue cures, which is what gives a pressed deck its spring instead of the dead flatness of a flat-cut plank. Once the pressed blank cures, the CNC handles cutting the outline (kicktail curves, wheelbase, nose and tail shape) and, if your design calls for it, routing a shallow pocket concave into the deck surface — both operations that are difficult to get symmetrical and repeatable by hand but are exactly what a CNC router is good at.
Build Steps
- Build or buy a two-part press mold. The mold is a male/female pair of MDF or plywood forms CNC-cut or CNC-flattened to the camber and concave profile you want, sized larger than your final deck outline since you'll cut the finished shape out of the pressed blank afterward. This is itself a good use of a CNC router: model the curve profile in CAD, cut cross-section ribs, and skin them with thin plywood or MDF to create the pressing surfaces.
- Cut veneer layers. Cut 7-9 sheets of 1.5mm veneer (hard maple is standard; bamboo or a mix of species works for a lighter or more flexible deck) to a rough rectangle a few inches larger than your final outline in every direction. Alternate grain direction 90 degrees between adjacent layers for strength, matching standard plywood construction, and keep the outer two layers running the long axis of the board for the top and bottom show veneers if you're using a nicer species there.
- Glue and stack. Apply a thin, even coat of wood glue (or, for higher heat and pot-life tolerance, a two-part epoxy or urea-formaldehyde press glue) to both faces of each interior veneer. Stack the full lay-up between the mold halves, keeping edges aligned with registration pins or blocks.
- Press. A vacuum press (a vacuum pump and a sealed bag) is the most accessible option for makers and gives even pressure across the whole curved surface; a mechanical press with the two mold halves clamped or bolted together works too but needs even clamp pressure across the whole area to avoid delamination in low-pressure spots. Cure time depends on your glue — read the datasheet, but plan for at least several hours under full pressure and a full 24 hours before unclamping and handling.
- Trim the rough blank. Pull the pressed blank from the mold and trim it to a rectangle slightly oversized from your final deck outline on the bandsaw or table saw — this gives you a flat-edged reference blank to register on the CNC bed.
- CNC the outline, truck mounting holes, and concave. Fixture the blank securely (double-sided tape plus a few screw-in blocks outside the deck outline works well since you can't clamp through the deck itself), then run a two-stage toolpath: a roughing pass to cut the outline profile most of the way through leaving small retaining tabs, followed by a finishing pass at full depth. Drill or spot the truck mounting holes on the same setup so they're referenced precisely to the deck's centerline. If your design calls for a routed pocket concave rather than a pressed one, run that as a separate 3D relief toolpath before cutting the outline.
- Sand, seal, and finish. Break the tabs, sand the perimeter and any tooling marks smooth, round over the edges, and apply several coats of a durable finish — a marine-grade spar polyurethane or an epoxy resin coating both hold up well to the moisture and abuse a longboard deck sees.
Safety Notes
Vacuum press bags can fail under load if punctured by a sharp veneer edge or press-mold corner — check the bag for pinholes before each use and keep a spare on hand, since a mid-cure bag failure means losing that glue-up. When CNC-cutting the finished blank, a longboard deck is a thin, springy, oddly-shaped workpiece; verify your hold-down is solid before running the job, since a shifted or lifted workpiece with a spinning bit nearby is a real kickback and tool-breakage risk. Wear a respirator when sanding — you're sanding cured glue lines and finish along with wood dust, and both can be more irritating than plain wood dust alone.
The mold is the part of this project that takes the most planning — get the camber and concave profile right there and every deck you press afterward comes out consistent, which is the whole advantage of building your own over hand-shaping a blank. Expect the first full deck to take a couple of weekends between mold-making, pressing, cure time, and CNC work, and expect the second one to go much faster once the mold and toolpaths are dialed in.
