3D Printing Troubleshooting Guide: Fix Layer Shifts, Stringing, Warping, and 30+ Common Problems
The Troubleshooting Mindset
Every 3D printing problem has a cause, and that cause falls into one of four categories: mechanical issues, slicer settings, filament quality, or environmental factors. This guide organizes the most common FDM printing problems by symptom, walks through their root causes from most to least likely, and provides specific fixes. Start with the first cause listed for each problem — it fixes 80% of cases.
If a slicer setting is the suspected cause, the G-Code Analyzer tool lets you paste or upload the actual G-code and check bounding box, layer count, retraction settings, and more directly, rather than guessing what the slicer actually generated.
First Layer Problems
Problem: First Layer Won't Stick to the Bed

E-Step Calibration
- Heat nozzle to printing temperature
- Mark filament 120mm from extruder entrance with sharpie
- Command extruder to extrude 100mm slowly (via LCD or G-code: G1 E100 F100)
- Measure remaining distance from mark to extruder
- Calculate: New E-steps = (Old E-steps × 100) ÷ (120 - measured_remaining)
- Save with M92 E[new_value] then M500
Flow Rate Calibration (Extrusion Multiplier)
- Print a single-wall cube (0.4mm wall, no infill, no top, 2 bottom layers)
- Measure wall thickness with calipers at multiple points
- New flow % = (0.4 ÷ measured_thickness) × current_flow%
- Remeasure and iterate until wall measures 0.4mm ±0.02mm
PID Auto-Tune (Temperature Stability)
