Getting Your Amateur Radio License: What Technician, General, and Extra Actually Unlock
If you've been receiving shortwave and ham traffic on an ATS Mini V4 or an RTL-SDR dongle, decoding FT8 with WSJT-X, or running a digital voice hotspot with a Raspberry Pi and an MMDVM board, you've probably run into the same wall: receiving is unlicensed and legal everywhere, but the moment you want to key up a transmitter, key a hotspot's RF stage, or run a real APRS tracker instead of just a receive-only iGate, you need an amateur radio license. Why This Matters Even for SDR and Digital-Mode Projects

In the U.S., transmitting on amateur radio frequencies without a license is a Part 97 violation the FCC does enforce, especially on repeaters and digital voice networks where every transmission carries your callsign (or should).

How the Exam Actually Works
- It's multiple choice, and the question pool is public. Unlike a driving test, every possible question and every possible answer (including the wrong ones) is published in advance by the National Conference of Volunteer Examiner Coordinators (NCVEC). There is no ambiguity about what might be asked.
- You can study with the exact question pool. Apps like HamStudy and Ham Radio Prep, and free sites that quiz you directly from the released pool, let you drill until you're consistently scoring 90%+ before you ever sit the real exam.
- No Morse code is required for any class since 2007 — this trips up people who remember the old requirements.
- Exams are given by volunteer examiners (VEs), usually in groups of three, often at local ham radio club meetings, hamfests, or now increasingly online via remote-proctored sessions through the ARRL or W4VEC.
- You can take all three exams in one sitting if you pass each one — many people walk in for Technician and walk out with General or even Extra the same day if they studied all three pools.
- Cost is typically $10–15, paid to the VE team, not the FCC.
After You Pass
Your license shows up in the FCC's ULS (Universal Licensing System) database within about a week, along with your assigned callsign — a randomly issued sequential call unless you later apply for a vanity callsign. At that point you're legal to transmit within your class's privileges, and this is also when you should register your callsign with any hotspot or digital-mode software (WSJT-X, MMDVM/Pi-Star, APRS clients) instead of leaving test or placeholder callsigns in the configuration — transmitting with an invalid or fake callsign is its own violation, separate from transmitting without a license at all.
What a License Changes About the Projects on This Site
Practically speaking, a license turns several receive-only setups into two-way ones: an ATS Mini or RTL-SDR-based station becomes something you can answer on, not just listen to; a Raspberry Pi digital voice hotspot goes from "monitoring the network" to actually keying up and talking through it; an APRS iGate becomes a station that can also beacon your own position; and SSTV reception becomes SSTV you can transmit as well. One more thing worth knowing before you study: license classes never expire your existing privileges when you upgrade, and licenses themselves are valid for 10 years and simply renewable, at no cost, through the FCC. There's no reason not to start at Technician, get on the air, and upgrade to General once you know you want the HF bands — it's a low-stakes on-ramp into a hobby that pairs naturally with almost everything else in the SDR and radio-adjacent content on this site.
