ATS Mini V4 Band Guide for Beginners: CB, VHF, MW, Shortwave, and Ham Bands Explained
If VHF FM is the only thing working reliably so far, that's not a hardware problem — it's the easiest band on the radio by design. Broadcast FM is wideband, high-power, and forgiving. Everything below it — MW and shortwave — is a different game: weaker signals, narrower filters, and antenna-dependent reception. This guide walks through every band the ATS Mini V4 covers, what actually lives there, and how to tune it so you stop getting static and start getting stations.
The Big Picture: Three Different Radio Worlds
The band list on the ATS Mini groups into three completely different types of listening, and knowing which one you're in changes your expectations:
- VHF (FM broadcast, ~64-108 MHz): Local, strong, easy. Line-of-sight propagation. If a station is within 30-50 miles, you'll get it clearly with just the whip antenna.
- MW / AM (520-1710 kHz, shown as MW1/MW2/MW3): Local and regional AM broadcast stations. Works day and night but changes character — distant stations "skip" in after dark.
- Shortwave (1.6-30 MHz, all the meter-band names like 49m, 41m, 31m, etc., plus the ham bands like 160m-10m): Long-distance, ionosphere-dependent, the most rewarding and the most finicky. This is where technique matters.

VHF — Why This One Already Works For You
VHF on the ATS Mini is FM broadcast radio, 64-108 MHz depending on region (Japan uses 76-95, most of the world 87.5-108). It's wideband FM with kilowatts of transmitter power behind it, so the radio's little telescopic whip is plenty of antenna. There's genuinely not much more to learn here — if you can find local FM stations, you already understand the core skill (extending the antenna, scanning slowly, watching the signal meter). The rest of this guide is about applying that same patience to weaker, narrower signals.
MW1 / MW2 / MW3 — AM Broadcast Band
These three MW entries are typically different tuning step/region presets for the same physical band (520-1710 kHz AM broadcast), not three separate bands — check the ATS Mini's region setting in the menu (see the Menu & Settings Deep Dive) since MW channel spacing differs between the Americas (10 kHz steps) and most of the rest of the world (9 kHz steps). Using the wrong region setting means stations will seem to land "between" channels.
- What's there: Local and regional AM talk/news/sports stations, plus at night, stations from hundreds of miles away as the signal skips off the ionosphere.
- Antenna: MW uses the internal ferrite bar antenna, not the telescopic whip. Rotating the entire radio (not just extending the antenna) changes reception dramatically since ferrite antennas are directional along their length.
- Best time to search: After sunset. AM DX (long-distance reception) opens up dramatically at night because the ionosphere's D-layer, which absorbs AM signals during the day, disappears.
- Technique: Tune slowly in small steps and rotate the radio at each frequency. A station that's just noise at one orientation can be perfectly clear 90 degrees rotated.
Shortwave Broadcast Bands (the "meter" names)
The meter-band names (11m, 13m, 15m, 16m, 19m, 22m, 25m, 31m, 41m, 49m, 60m, 75m, 90m) are shortwave broadcast allocations used by international broadcasters — the shortwave equivalent of FM/AM stations, but from all over the world. The "meter" number is the approximate wavelength; lower numbers mean higher frequency. Here's what to expect on each, roughly ordered by how easy they are for a beginner:
49m, 41m, 31m (roughly 5.9-9.9 MHz) — Start Here
These are the most active, most reliable shortwave broadcast bands for a beginner. 49m and 41m are strong at night; 31m works well both day and night. If you want your first successful shortwave catch, park here in the evening and tune slowly — you should find religious broadcasters, Radio Havana Cuba, China Radio International, and various clandestine/utility stations depending on time and your location.
25m, 22m, 19m (roughly 11.6-15.8 MHz) — Daytime Bands
These favor daylight hours and are good mid-latitude bands. 19m in particular has historically been one of the most heavily used international broadcast bands. Try these during the day when 49m/41m have gone quiet.
16m, 15m, 13m, 11m (roughly 13.5-21.9 MHz + 25.6-26.1 MHz) — High Bands, Sun-Dependent
These upper bands depend heavily on solar activity and daylight — they can be dead for weeks during solar minimum and wide open during solar maximum. 11m specifically overlaps with the Citizens Band (see below). When these open up they carry signals enormous distances; when they're closed, you'll hear nothing but noise.
60m, 75m, 90m (roughly 3.2-5.9 MHz) — Regional, Nighttime
Lower shortwave, mostly active at night, more prone to local electrical noise (these frequencies are close to where household electronics and switching power supplies generate interference). 90m in particular is a tropical broadcast band aimed at regional audiences in Africa/Latin America/Asia — hard to catch from outside those regions but not impossible after dark with a good antenna.
CB — Citizens Band (26.965-27.405 MHz, overlapping 11m)
CB is unlicensed two-way voice radio, not broadcasting — you're listening to real conversations between truckers, off-roaders, and hobbyists rather than scheduled programs. On the ATS Mini this sits right at the top of the shortwave range, in AM mode. Traffic is sparse most of the time but picks up near highways and during "band openings" when atmospheric conditions let CB skip long distances (sometimes coast-to-coast or further). If you hear nothing, that's normal for most hours — try during commute times or when solar conditions favor the 10m/11m/12m range.
The Ham Radio Bands (160m, 80m, 40m, 30m, 20m, 17m, 15m, 12m, 10m)
These are amateur (ham) radio allocations. As a receive-only listener you don't need a license to listen — only to transmit — so this is completely legal SWL (shortwave listening) territory. This is genuinely the most interesting part of the dial for an active hobbyist because you're listening to real-time, unscripted conversations, not programmed broadcasts. Two things make ham bands harder than broadcast bands, though:
- Mode: Most ham voice activity is SSB (LSB below 10 MHz, USB above), not AM/FM. If the ATS Mini is set to AM mode on a ham band, voices sound like garbled Donald Duck static even with a strong signal. You must manually switch to LSB or USB mode for that band. - Fine tuning: SSB signals are narrow and phase-sensitive; you'll need to tune in small steps (use the fine-tune step size in the menu) to get voices sounding natural instead of high-pitched or muffled.
Quick band-by-band notes:
- 160m (1.8-2.0 MHz) & 80m (3.5-4.0 MHz): Night bands, regional range, lots of local AM broadcast splatter can interfere since they're close to the MW band. Mode: LSB.
- 40m (7.0-7.3 MHz): The workhorse band — active almost any time, day or night, regional to continental range. Great band to practice SSB tuning on because there's nearly always someone talking. Mode: LSB.
- 30m (10.1-10.15 MHz): Narrow, mostly data modes (digital signals, not voice) — you'll hear buzzy/warbling tones rather than speech. Mode: USB, but don't expect much voice.
- 20m (14.0-14.35 MHz): The prime daytime DX band — worldwide contacts, very active during daylight. Mode: USB. If you only try one ham band during the day, make it this one.
- 17m, 15m, 12m, 10m (18.068-29.7 MHz): Solar-activity-dependent, like the upper shortwave broadcast bands. 10m in particular can be completely dead for months and then suddenly open worldwide during solar maximum. Mode: USB for all.
A Practical Search Routine
Since you're only landing FM so far, here's the order of operations to start actually catching shortwave and ham stations:
- Extend the telescopic antenna fully for shortwave/CB/ham bands (MW uses the internal ferrite bar instead, so extending the whip won't help there).
- Start after dark on 49m or 41m in AM mode. This is the highest-probability first win.
- Tune slowly. Shortwave signals are narrow; sweeping fast will make you miss them entirely. Move in small frequency steps and pause a second or two on each.
- Switch to LSB/USB before trying any ham band (160m through 10m). AM mode will make every SSB signal sound like broken noise even at full strength.
- Try 20m and 40m during the day and 40m/80m at night once you're comfortable with SSB tuning — these are the most consistently active ham bands.

If you're still getting nothing but static after working through this, it's almost always one of: antenna not extended, wrong AM/LSB/USB mode for the band, band genuinely closed due to time-of-day or solar conditions, or a weak/compromised antenna — work through the troubleshooting guide in that order.
