Calibrating Diode Laser Focal Length with a Ramp Test
What Is a Ramp Test
A ramp test finds the true optimal focal distance for a diode laser on a specific material. You fire a single line across a wedge-shaped ramp — material elevated at one end — so the laser travels across a gradient of heights. The narrowest, sharpest point of the burn line is your true focal distance.
Why Factory Focal Distance Is Wrong
Diode laser focal distance specs are measured to the nominal focal point in air. Your actual optimal focal point depends on lens condition, module tolerances, and the specific material. A ramp test finds the real number for your machine and use case.
Building the Ramp
Use a flat piece elevated at one end on a known-height spacer. A 200mm long piece elevated 10mm at one end gives 5% slope. Mark the zero end clearly.
Running the Test
Set the laser to low power, high speed, single-line pass. In LightBurn, draw a horizontal line the length of your ramp and send it at 50% speed, 25% power. The burn line is widest at the extremes (out of focus) and narrowest at the true focal point.
Reading the Result
The narrowest visible point is your optimal focal distance. Measure its horizontal position, calculate the height at that position using your slope. Set your Z-axis or fixed standoff to this value.
Engraving vs Cutting
Optimal focal for engraving is at the material surface. For cutting, focus 0.5–1mm below the surface to distribute energy through more of the kerf depth. Run separate ramp tests for each use case.
