CorelDraw for Laser Cutting: Complete Guide
Why CorelDraw for Laser Work CorelDraw is the traditional software of choice for sign shops and established laser businesses. Its PowerTRACE tool, weld/trim operations, and DXF export are all excellent. The unique advantage over other apps: Centerline Trace — tracing lines as single strokes rather than filled outlines, which is how engraving paths should be structured. Subscription cost or perpetual license. CorelDraw Essentials is a cheaper entry point. Document Setup File → New → Blank Document: set units to mm, page size to your laser bed dimensions. View → Show → Guidelines and Snap to Guidelines for accurate layout work. Drawing Tools Rectangle tool (R): click-drag. Double-click a corner to apply corner radius. Hold Ctrl for perfect square. Ellipse tool (F7): hold Ctrl for circle. Bezier/Pen tool (B): click for straight segments, click-drag for curves. Finish with double-click or pressing Spacebar. Text tool (T): always convert to curves before exporting for laser: Text → Convert to Curves (Ctrl+Q). This embeds the letter shapes as vector paths. PowerTRACE Select a bitmap → Bitmaps → PowerTRACE (Ctrl+F12). Two Trace Modes Outline Trace: traces closed filled shapes. Options: Line Art: for clean high-contrast drawings Logo: moderate detail logos Detailed Logo: complex logos with many elements Centerline Trace: CorelDraw's unique advantage. Traces lines as single strokes — not filled outlines. Options: Technical Illustration: engineering drawings Pen Drawing: hand-drawn line art Centerline trace is invaluable for: laser engraving paths (lines should be strokes, not outlines), pen plotter designs, and single-pass engraving work. Adjustment Controls Detail: how much edge detail to include. Smoothing: how much to smooth jagged pixel edges. Corner Smoothness: sharp vs rounded corners. Remove Background: removes the white/light background color from the trace. Watch the live preview while adjusting. Weld, Trim, and Intersect Select two or more overlapping objects, then use the Shaping docker (Window → Dockers → Shaping): Weld: merges all selected objects into one united shape. Use to combine overlapping design elements into a single cut outline. Trim: subtracts overlapping areas from the bottom object. For holes: draw hole shape on top, use Trim. Intersect: creates a new object from only the overlapping area. Simplify: removes hidden areas where objects overlap. Good for cleaning up complex imported DXF files. Organizing for Laser Operations Use object colors to define laser operations. Color convention (matching common laser software imports): Red: cut paths Black or Blue: engrave fills Green: score lines Assign colors via the color palette at the bottom. Each color will become a separate layer in most laser software. Exporting for Laser Software DXF: most reliable CorelDraw export for laser machines using proprietary software (Ruida, BJJCZ controllers, etc.). File → Export (Ctrl+E) → AutoCAD (DXF) format. In the DXF export dialog, choose: Version: AutoCAD R14 or 2000 for broadest compatibility Curves as: Polylines (for machines that struggle with splines) Text: must already be converted to curves before this step SVG: for LightBurn. File → Export → SVG. Clean and reliable. PDF: File → Export PDF. LightBurn imports PDF as vectors. Common Issues Imported DXF looks exploded (too many separate paths): use Weld or Arrange → Combine to join related paths. Scale wrong after DXF import: always verify a known-size object's dimensions in the receiving software after importing. CorelDraw DXF sometimes needs scale correction. PowerTRACE produces too many nodes: use Object → Curves → Reduce Nodes after expanding the trace result.
