Getting Started with POTA and SOTA: Portable Ham Radio Operating, Antennas, and Logging
Most of the ham radio content a maker runs into is either about home stations — antennas up a tower, a desk full of gear — or emergency-communications theory. POTA (Parks on the Air) and SOTA (Summits on the Air) sit in between: they're structured, gamified excuses to take a radio outside, set up fast, make contacts, and pack out again. Both programs give you a clear goal (activate a park or summit, log a set number of contacts) and an active community of "hunters" listening for activators, which makes them a genuinely good on-ramp if you've got a license and a radio sitting in a drawer.
POTA vs SOTA, Briefly
POTA tracks activations of officially registered parks, forests, and other public lands — thousands of them in the US and a growing international list. There's no elevation or physical difficulty requirement; most POTA activations happen from a parking area or picnic table inside park boundaries. SOTA tracks summits above a minimum prominence threshold that varies by region, and typically requires actually hiking to the activation zone near the top. SOTA activations earn points based on the summit's elevation, and both programs require a minimum number of confirmed two-way contacts (10 for a POTA activation, 4 for SOTA) to count as a successful activation. You can chase both with the same gear and the same license — the difference is mostly in how much you're willing to carry uphill.
License Requirement
Both programs require a valid amateur radio license to transmit — Technician class in the US is enough for the VHF/UHF and most HF privileges activators actually use. You can also participate as a "hunter" (someone calling activators to log contacts) with just a receiver and no license, but you cannot transmit or complete an activation yourself without one.
Gear: What Actually Matters for Portable Operating
Portable HF work is a different design problem than a base station — everything you bring has to be carried, set up quickly, and torn down before weather or daylight forces the issue. A few choices matter more than the radio itself:
- QRP transceivers: Low-power (5W or less) radios dominate POTA/SOTA because battery weight scales directly with output power, and HF propagation means 5W with a good antenna reliably makes contacts across hundreds or thousands of miles under decent conditions. - Antennas: A random wire or end-fed half-wave thrown over a tree branch, or a lightweight vertical with a tripod mount, covers most activation needs. - Logging: Paper log and a pencil works and is what most activators still default to in the field, since it has zero battery drain and zero software to fight with. Apps like HAMRS and the official POTA/SOTA mobile apps handle GPS-tagged spotting and make submission after the fact much faster if you prefer a phone-based log.
- Spotting: Both programs use online spotting networks (POTA's spotting page, SOTAwatch/RBN) so hunters know when and where you're active. Cell signal at a park is usually fine; on a remote summit it often isn't, so many SOTA activators self-spot via APRS or satellite messenger, or simply call CQ on a known calling frequency and let the automated spotting networks (which monitor for CW and FT8 activity) pick them up.

Running an Activation
A typical POTA activation: arrive, confirm you're inside the park boundary (the POTA app or a GPS boundary check handles this), deploy the antenna, get on a clear frequency, and call "CQ POTA" while self-spotting online if you have signal. Work through pileups efficiently — exchange callsign and signal report, log, move to the next station — since hunters are often waiting for multiple activators in a short window. Ten confirmed contacts completes the activation; most activators aim for well more than that since band conditions and propagation can be unpredictable.
SOTA activations follow the same contact-logging structure but add real hiking logistics: check the route and weather before committing, budget setup and teardown time against remaining daylight, and treat the activation zone requirement (typically within 25 vertical meters of the true summit) as a hard boundary — contacts made outside it don't count toward the summit's points.
Safety Notes
SOTA activations are backcountry hiking trips first and radio activities second — normal hiking safety applies in full: tell someone your route and expected return time, carry more water and layers than you think you need, and be willing to abandon an activation attempt if weather turns, especially on exposed summits where a lightning cell can move in faster than you can pack out. Wire antennas thrown over trees or strung along ridgelines should always come down before or at the first sign of a thunderstorm — a suspended wire is a lightning attraction hazard regardless of whether a radio is connected to it. POTA and SOTA won't replace a home station for serious DXing or contesting, but they're the fastest path from "I have a license and a radio I never use" to actually making contacts on a regular basis.
