Choosing Your First Ham Radio HF Transceiver: New vs Used Rigs, ATUs, and Matching a Rig to Your License Class

Match the Rig to Your License Class First
Your license class determines which HF bands and modes you can legally use, and buying an HF-capable rig before you have at least a General class license (in the US; other countries have their own tiers) means an expensive piece of equipment sits mostly idle. - Technician class: Legal on VHF/UHF (2m, 70cm) plus a small slice of 10m HF phone/CW. A dual-band handheld or mobile rig is the right first purchase; do not buy an HF transceiver yet unless you are testing for General soon.

Rig Categories and What They're Actually For
Handheld Transceivers (HTs)
A dual-band 2m/70cm HT (Baofeng UV-5R for $30 to learn on, or a Yaesu FT-70D or Icom ID-52 for a more durable and better-filtered radio once you know you'll stick with the hobby) is the correct first radio for almost everyone, licensed at Technician or above. It gets you on local repeaters immediately and is what most new hams use for their first contacts.
Mobile/Base HF Transceivers
This is the category most new General-class hams are shopping in. Reasonable starting points:
- Yaesu FT-891: Compact, mobile-friendly, full HF+6m coverage, no built-in tuner. A workhorse for POTA/SOTA portable operating and mobile installs.
- Icom IC-7300: The rig most commonly recommended as a first "real" HF station. SDR-based receiver, built-in waterfall display, excellent value, and a huge installed base means plenty of community troubleshooting resources exist.
- Xiegu G90: Budget QRP (low power) option with a built-in antenna tuner, popular for portable and field operation where every ounce and watt matters.
Flagship/Contest-Grade Rigs
Icom IC-7610, Yaesu FTdx101, Elecraft K4 and similar rigs add dual receivers, sharper roofing filters, and better close-in dynamic range for working weak signals next to strong ones — genuinely useful for contesting or crowded band conditions, largely wasted on a casual operator making occasional contacts.
The Antenna Tuner (ATU) Question
Most HF transceivers do not include an internal antenna tuner, or include one with a limited matching range. An ATU does not make a poorly matched antenna radiate better; it protects the transmitter's finals from a high SWR by presenting a matched load at the radio's output, which lets you use a single wire antenna across multiple bands without re-cutting it for each one.
- Built-in ATU: Convenient, usually covers a 3:1 SWR range or better. Present on rigs like the Xiegu G90, absent on the base IC-7300 and FT-891 (available as an add-on for the 891).
- External ATU: A separate unit (LDG, mAT, or a manual Z-match/L-match tuner) sitting between the radio and the feedline. More flexible matching range, necessary for random-wire or end-fed antennas far outside a resonant length. Buy the tuner as part of your initial budget, not as an afterthought — a rig with no way to match a real-world antenna installation is a rig that spends its first month generating high-SWR fault warnings instead of contacts.

There is no single "best" HF transceiver, only the one that matches your license class, how you plan to operate (fixed base, mobile, or portable/POTA), and what you can actually afford to buy once rather than twice. Start at the IC-7300/FT-891/G90 tier unless you have a specific reason not to; it is the price point where the used-flagship math stops making sense and a new rig with modern DSP and a real warranty wins.
