Glowforge Complete Guide: The Proprietary Cloud Workflow vs GRBL/LightBurn Machines
Every other laser covered on this site — the Longer Ray5, xTool S1 and F1 Ultra, OMTech CO2 machines, K40 upgrades — shares a common software ecosystem built around GRBL or Ruida controllers and LightBurn as the near-universal design-and-control layer. Glowforge deliberately does none of that. It's a closed, cloud-connected CO2 laser platform with its own app, its own file format handling, and no LightBurn support at all, and that's a genuinely different enough set of tradeoffs that it deserves its own guide rather than being folded into our general CO2 laser buying guide.
What Glowforge Actually Is
Glowforge sells three tiers — the Basic, Plus, and Pro (with a smaller diode-based Aura model aimed at a different, more casual segment) — as fully enclosed, class-1-rated CO2 laser systems with a built-in camera for on-lid material preview. The headline difference from every other machine on this site: Glowforge requires an active internet connection and a Glowforge account to operate. There is no offline mode, no LightBurn driver, and no way to run the laser purely from local software the way you can with any GRBL or Ruida-based machine — every job passes through Glowforge's cloud service, which handles the "trace" and toolpath generation from your uploaded design.
The Software Workflow
- Design upload: Drag an SVG, PDF, JPG, or PNG into the Glowforge web app (or design directly in it with basic built-in tools); the app auto-traces raster images into cuttable/engravable paths.
- Camera-assisted placement: The built-in lid camera shows a live view of your material bed in the app, and you position your design directly over the physical material on screen — genuinely convenient for engraving onto an odd-shaped scrap or a specific spot on a pre-printed item, and a workflow LightBurn-based machines can only approximate with add-on cameras and manual calibration, covered in our LightBurn camera guide for comparison.
- Material settings: Glowforge ships a large built-in material settings library (their own proprietary branded materials plus generic presets) selectable from a dropdown rather than the manual speed/power test-grid process covered in our LightBurn material test grid guide — convenient when it matches your actual material, less useful when it doesn't and you need to build a custom setting by hand, which the app does support but with less granular control than LightBurn offers.
- No offline fallback: If your internet goes down, or Glowforge's cloud service has an outage, the laser does not cut. This has been a recurring point of criticism since the company's earliest crowdfunding days and remains true today — it's the single biggest practical difference from every other laser on this site.

Glowforge's pitch is genuinely appealing for a specific user: someone who wants to design and cut immediately with minimal setup friction and doesn't mind (or actively wants) a managed, cloud-connected appliance rather than a machine they tune and maintain themselves — a classroom, a library makerspace, or a hobbyist who has zero interest in the GRBL/LightBurn learning curve covered across the rest of our laser content. If you want offline operation, full manual control over every cut parameter, the ability to keep running the machine indefinitely without a subscription or cloud dependency, or the open third-party parts ecosystem that makes something like a K40 or OMTech machine cheap to keep alive for a decade, the GRBL/LightBurn machines covered elsewhere on this site are the better fit.
Safety Notes
Glowforge machines are enclosed with safety interlocks similar in principle to the xTool S1's enclosed swing-arm design — do not defeat the lid interlock to run the laser with the enclosure open. Ventilation still matters: Glowforge units exhaust through a duct to the outdoors (or through their optional filtered "Air Filter" accessory for indoor-only use), and the same general laser ventilation and fire-safety principles covered in our laser engraver safety guide apply regardless of which brand of machine is doing the cutting.
Glowforge and the GRBL/LightBurn machines that make up most of this site's laser coverage aren't really competing on the same axis — one sells convenience and a managed experience, the other sells control and independence from any one company's servers staying online. Know which one you actually want before you buy, because retrofitting a Glowforge into an offline LightBurn workflow, or the reverse, isn't something either ecosystem supports.
