How to Use a Rotary Attachment with Your Laser: Engraving Round Objects and Tumblers
What Is a Rotary Attachment?
A rotary attachment is a device that holds cylindrical or round objects and rotates them precisely under the laser head, effectively turning a flat laser engraver into a machine that can engrave around bottles, tumblers, wine glasses, baseball bats, and more. Instead of the Y-axis moving the bed, the rotary's roller or chuck mechanism rotates the object to present fresh surface area to the laser beam. This guide covers both roller-style and chuck-style rotaries, setup, alignment, and project workflow.
Types of Rotary Attachments
Roller/Barrel Style
The workpiece rests on two or four rubber rollers. One roller is driven by a stepper motor, rotating the object. The laser head moves along X while the rotary handles Y (rotation).
- Pros: Simple, accommodates many diameters automatically, no clamping needed for most items, easy loading/unloading
- Cons: Tapered objects may slip, very lightweight items can shift, limited to objects with consistent round profiles
- Best for: Standard tumblers, wine glasses, bottles, rolling pins, baseball bats
Chuck Style (3-Jaw or 4-Jaw)
The object is clamped into a chuck (like a lathe). The chuck rotates the workpiece. Ideal for irregular shapes and tapered items.
- Pros: Secure grip on irregular shapes, handles tapered objects, can engrave near the ends of objects, no slippage
- Cons: Slower setup (clamping required), limited by chuck jaw opening diameter, risk of crushing thin-walled objects
- Best for: Irregular round objects, wine bottles (with rubber jaw liners), tapered cups, small-diameter items
Tablet/Plane Style (for flat curved surfaces)
A flat bed with adjustable supports for engraving on the curved surface of flat-walled objects. Less common for hobby lasers.

Physical Installation
- Remove or lower the honeycomb/laser bed: The rotary needs to sit at laser focal height. Most rotaries have adjustable legs to achieve this.
- Disconnect the Y-axis stepper motor from your laser controller. The rotary's stepper motor plugs into this Y-axis port.
- Plug the rotary stepper into the Y-axis driver. Note the wire order — if the rotary spins backward, power off and flip any two motor wires (except the ground/black wire).
- Position the rotary in the laser bed. Place it so the laser head can reach the full engraving area of your typical objects.
- Level the rotary: Use a small level on the roller bars. Adjust the feet until perfectly level. Uneven rotation causes distorted engravings.
- Place your object: For roller rotaries, center the object on the rollers. For chuck rotaries, clamp securely with jaw liners to prevent scratching.
- Focus the laser: Manually jog the laser head over the object surface and set your focal distance using your standard focus method (manual gauge, autofocus, or touch probe).
Software Configuration
In LightBurn (Recommended)
- Go to Laser Tools → Rotary Setup.
- Enable the rotary checkbox.
- Set Rotary Type to "Roller" or "Chuck".
- For Roller rotaries:
- Roller Diameter: Measure your drive roller with calipers (typically 54mm for OMTech, 50mm for Sculpfun).
- Object Diameter: Enter the diameter of your workpiece (or let LightBurn calculate from circumference).
- Circumference: Optional — LightBurn calculates this from diameter. Verify with a tape measure for accuracy.
- For Chuck rotaries:
- Steps per Rotation: This is your Y-axis steps/mm × the chuck's mm per full rotation. Typical values: 3600-12800 steps/rotation.
- Click "Test" to verify one full rotation equals 360°.
- Click OK to enable rotary mode. Your Y-axis jog controls will now rotate the object instead of moving the bed.
In LaserGRBL
LaserGRBL has limited rotary support. You'll need to manually configure Y-axis steps per mm to match your rotary's mechanical reduction. The formula:
New Steps/mm = (Motor Steps/Rev × Microstepping × Gear Ratio) ÷ (Roller Diameter × π)Save your original steps/mm value — you'll need to restore it when disconnecting the rotary.
In RDWorks/LaserCAD (Ruida controllers)
- User → Rotary Axis → Enable.
- Set Axis Y as the rotary axis.
- Enter pulse per revolution (calculate from your stepper driver settings).
- Set diameter or circumference of the workpiece.
- Use "Division" circle marking to test a full rotation.
Calibrating Your Rotary
Proper calibration is the difference between perfect engravings and stretched/squashed results:
Step 1: Verify Full Rotation
- Mark a small dot on your test object with a Sharpie.
- In your software, jog the Y-axis (which rotates the object) by 360mm.
- The object should make exactly one full revolution and the dot should return to the starting position.
- If it over-rotates: decrease the steps per rotation or increase the roller diameter value.
- If it under-rotates: increase the steps per rotation or decrease the roller diameter value.
- Fine-tune until a 360mm jog equals exactly one revolution.
Step 2: Test Square/Circle Pattern
- Create a 20mm × 20mm square in your design software.
- Run it at low power on scrap material wrapped around a cylinder of known diameter.
- Measure the engraved square. If it's rectangular (e.g., 20mm × 22mm), your circumference/diameter setting is wrong.
- Adjust the object diameter setting until you get a perfect square. This confirms your rotary is properly calibrated.
Step 3: Focus Check Across the Curve
- The laser focus changes as the beam moves across a curved surface. The "focus zone" is the area where the beam is acceptably sharp.
- For a 50mm diameter tumbler with a 2" lens (50.8mm focal length), the usable focus zone is approximately 8-12mm wide.
- For best results on curved surfaces, keep your design within this focus zone. For large designs, you may need to rotate the object manually between engraving sessions, refocusing each time.
Designing for Rotary Engraving
Wrapping and Sizing
- Your design's vertical dimension (Y-axis in the design software) maps to the object's circumference.
- A 250mm tall design on a tumbler with 251mm circumference wraps exactly once around.
- A 125mm tall design wraps halfway around — leaving blank space on the back.
- Always measure circumference with a flexible tape measure, not by calculating π×diameter. Manufacturing tolerances and material thickness mean the actual circumference often differs by 2-5mm from the calculated value.
Seam Alignment
The "seam" is where the top and bottom of your design meet around the object. To hide it:
- Place the seam at the back of the object, away from the main viewing angle.
- Use designs with natural breaks (tree trunks, vertical lines) at the seam point.
- Add 1-2mm overlap at the seam to ensure no gap.
- Some software (LightBurn) can automatically handle seam placement.
Handling Tapered Objects (Wine Glasses, etc.)
- Measure diameter at the top, middle, and bottom of the engraving area.
- Use the average diameter for your software setting.
- For precise work, use a chuck rotary with the object aligned to minimize taper across the engraving zone.
- Alternatively, use LightBurn's "Tapered Wine Glass" mode which compensates for varying diameter.
- Keep the engraving area narrow on highly tapered objects to minimize distortion.

- Prepare the tumbler: Clean with isopropyl alcohol to remove oils. Do not use acetone — it can damage powder coating.
- Measure circumference: Wrap a flexible measuring tape around the tumbler where you'll engrave. Record this value.
- Measure diameter: Use calipers to measure the outer diameter.
- Install rotary: Connect to Y-axis, level, place tumbler centered on rollers.
- Focus: Jog laser over tumbler surface, set focal distance.
- Configure software: Enable rotary mode, enter roller diameter and object diameter/circumference.
- Frame the design: Use the "Frame" function in LightBurn to trace the outline. Watch the laser head move across X while the tumbler rotates for Y. Verify the framing covers the intended area.
- Test on masking tape: Apply painter's tape to the tumbler, run at low power to verify positioning. Adjust if needed.
- Engrave: Remove tape, run the job at proper power/speed settings.
- Clean: Wipe with a damp cloth to remove any residue. Do not use abrasive cleaners on powder coat.
