Inventables X-Carve Complete Setup Guide: Assembly, Easel, and Your First Cut
The Inventables X-Carve has been one of the most widely owned hobby CNC routers for over a decade, predating most of the desktop CNC machines covered elsewhere on this site — a huge secondhand and upgraded-parts market exists for it, and it's the machine a lot of makers cut their teeth on before "desktop CNC" became as crowded a category as it is today. Assembly Reality Check
Unlike most modern desktop CNC kits, which ship mostly pre-assembled, the X-Carve is a genuine kit build: aluminum extrusion rails, belts, V-wheels, and a gShield or X-Controller electronics package that you assemble from a parts list. Budget a full weekend for first assembly, not an evening — this is closer in scope to building a Voron 3D printer from a kit than to unboxing a Kobra 3. Follow Inventables' official assembly documentation step by step rather than improvising order of operations; a surprising number of X-Carve frustration threads trace back to a belt or wheel installed out of the documented sequence, which makes later adjustment steps harder than they need to be.
Key Assembly Points Worth Extra Attention
- V-wheel tension: The X-Carve rides on eccentric-nut V-wheels rather than linear rails or ballscrews. Under-tensioned wheels cause play and poor cut quality; over-tensioned wheels bind and wear prematurely. Follow Inventables' tensioning procedure and recheck after the first few hours of use, since new wheels seat in slightly.
- Belt tension: GT2 belts need to be tensioned evenly on both sides of each axis — an unevenly tensioned belt pulls the gantry slightly out of square over the length of a cut, showing up as parts that are subtly out of dimension in one direction only.

Easel Software
Inventables' Easel is a browser-based, all-in-one design-and-cut tool that's meaningfully different from the CAM-software-plus-separate-sender workflow used by most other machines on this site (Vectric Aspire, Fusion 360, EstlCAM, then a GRBL sender like gSender or UGS). Easel bundles basic 2D design, toolpath generation, and machine control into one browser tab, which makes it the easiest on-ramp for a first cut but a real limitation once you want 3D reliefs, complex nesting, or offline operation — most experienced X-Carve owners eventually move some or all of their workflow to Fusion 360 or Vectric Aspire for CAM while keeping Easel or gSender for machine control. Start with Easel for your first cuts; it removes almost every setup variable except the machine itself.
Your First Cut
- Home the machine and set work zero using Easel's guided setup — for a first cut, use the corner of your spoilboard rather than the center, since it's easier to verify visually that the bit is where you expect.
