Acrylic (Cast)
⬡ Chemical Resistant
Overview
Cast acrylic (PMMA) — the premium laser material for signs, displays, and decorative work. Produces flame-polished edges when cut and a frosted glass appearance when engraved. Superior optical clarity and consistency vs extruded acrylic. CO2 laser recommended — diode is much less effective.

Pros
- Flame-polished edges when cut
- Frosted appearance when engraved
- Excellent optical clarity
- Consistent material throughout
- Available clear, mirrored, coloured, fluorescent
- Accepts dye and laminate film
- Laser-safe material
Cons
- Brittle — chips on sharp impact
- Requires masking to prevent smoke staining polished face
- Edge yellowing with excessive power
- NOT PVC — always verify material
- CO2 gives best results; diode is poor
Best For
- Signs and plaques|LED edge-lit displays|Jewellery and keychains|Custom enclosure panels|Architectural models|Custom awards and trophies
Avoid For
- PVC — similar look but toxic|Food contact|Outdoor exposure without UV-stable grade
Laser Compatibility
CO2 STRONGLY recommended — CO2 wavelength absorbed efficiently by acrylic. Cut 3mm clear: 25mm/s 80% single pass. Cut 6mm: 10mm/s 100% 2 passes. Engrave: 400mm/s 20%. Air assist to clear fumes and prevent re-melt. Mask surface before cutting. Diode lasers on clear acrylic: minimal effectiveness — use painted acrylic instead. NEVER cut PVC — verify all acrylic with burn test.
