Pros
  • Extremely flexible and rubber-like
  • High impact resistance
  • Excellent abrasion resistance
  • Good chemical resistance
  • No enclosure needed
  • Durable and long-lasting
  • Wide hardness range available (82A-95A)
  • Good for wearables and gaskets
Cons
  • Difficult to print (requires direct drive)
  • Slow print speeds
  • Poor bridging and overhangs
  • Stringing issues
  • Hygroscopic (dry before use)
  • Can jam in Bowden extruders
  • Not biodegradable
  • Moderate VOC emissions
Best For
  • Phone cases
  • shoe soles
  • grips
  • gaskets
  • cable protectors
  • RC tire inserts
  • vibration dampeners
Avoid For
  • Bowden printers (possible)
  • structural parts
  • fine detail
  • fast printing
Storage
Very hygroscopic. Dry 6-8h @ 55°C. Wet TPU prints brittle and snaps rather than flexes.
Laser Compatibility
LASER INTERACTION Safety: CAUTION to AVOID — TPU combustion products depend heavily on formulation. Fumes: Thermoplastic polyurethane releases isocyanates and other urethane decomposition products when burned. Isocyanates are potent sensitizers — exposure can cause permanent asthma. Warning: Isocyanates are one of the most hazardous industrial chemicals — small exposures can cause lifelong respiratory sensitization. Exercise extreme caution. If laser marking TPU is required, use maximum ventilation, NIOSH-approved organic vapor respirator, and keep power and exposure extremely low. If attempting (not recommended): CO2 at 500mm/s @ 8% maximum. Avoid any visible smoke.
