Audi A5 2.0 TFSI โ€” Timing Chain Reassembly Notes

Vehicle

2011 Audi A5 2.0 TFSI (CAEB engine code) Status: Post head gasket / machine shop โ€” timing chain reassembly in progress

Current Status

  • Head machined, new gasket installed
  • TDC set, cams out
  • Upper timing chain guide seating โ€” in progress
  • Cam and crank timing tools on hand

Timing Chain System (CAEB)

ComponentNotes
Primary chainCrank to intermediate shaft
Secondary chainIntermediate shaft to cams
Upper guideTensioned by hydraulic tensioner
Lower guideFixed, bolted
Tensioner (upper)Hydraulic, locks with pin during assembly

Assembly Sequence

  1. Set crank to TDC (mark on crank pulley to timing cover reference)
  2. Install lower chain guide
  3. Thread primary chain around crank sprocket and intermediate shaft
  4. Install upper chain guide (this is the tricky one โ€” seats in groove)
  5. Install primary chain tensioner
  6. Install secondary chain (cam side)
  7. Install cam sprockets โ€” verify marks align
  8. Install secondary tensioner
  9. Remove tensioner lock pins
  10. Rotate engine 2x by hand โ€” verify TDC marks realign

Upper Chain Guide โ€” Known Issue

The upper guide snaps into a groove in the block. Must be fully seated before installing tensioner. With cams out, access is easier but still tight.

Approach:

  • Use a long flat pick to guide the tab into the groove
  • Confirm with a mirror/flashlight before proceeding
  • Do not force tensioner if guide is not fully seated

Cam Timing Marks (CAEB)

  • Intake cam: mark at 12 o'clock when at TDC
  • Exhaust cam: mark at 12 o'clock when at TDC
  • Crank: TDC notch aligned with reference on front cover
