Ablating Paint for High-Resolution Marking on Metal
Laser Marking Limitations
Low-power diode and CO2 lasers cannot directly etch polished metal. Paint ablation uses the laser to remove a surface coating (paint or powder coat) to reveal the metal beneath.
Process
1. Clean the metal surface thoroughly and apply a uniform layer of matte black spray paint (or specialized marking compound like Cermark). 2. Set the laser for high-speed, low-power engraving. 3. The laser will vaporize the paint, leaving a sharp, high-contrast marking. 4. After etching, wash away the remaining marking compound or excessive paint with solvent (like denatured alcohol) if required.
