Choosing and Setting Up a Bench Vise for the Maker Shop: Machinist, Woodworking, and Multi-Jaw Types Compared
A bench vise is one of those tools every shop already has, in the sense that some vise is usually bolted to a bench somewhere — and one of the most common shop upgrades is discovering that the vise that came with the bench, or came free with a used tool, is the wrong type entirely for the work being clamped in it. Machinist vises, woodworking vises, and small multi-jaw electronics vises solve genuinely different clamping problems, and using the wrong one costs you either crushed material, marred parts, or a workpiece that shifts mid-cut.

- Jaw width: The horizontal length of the jaw face. Wider jaws grip longer stock more evenly; 4-6" is a reasonable general-shop size, with larger machinist vises (6"+) worth it if you regularly clamp longer bar stock or wide panels.
- Jaw opening (throat capacity): How far the jaws can spread. This is the number that determines the largest stock you can actually clamp — check it against the biggest material you realistically work with, not just your average job.
- Throat depth: The distance from the jaw face down to the vise body/slide. A deeper throat lets you clamp tall stock vertically without the workpiece bottoming out on the vise body before the jaws can close on it.
- Swivel base: Lets you rotate the entire vise on its mount without loosening the workpiece — genuinely useful for angled cuts and filing, and worth the modest cost premium on a machinist vise. Skip it on a dedicated woodworking face vise, where it isn't a relevant feature.
- Clamping force / screw size: Larger vises with a thicker Acme-thread screw hold more force with less arm effort, which matters most once you're clamping metal stock for filing, sawing, or press-fit work rather than light assembly holding.
Mounting
A vise that isn't solidly mounted transmits every bit of force back into your bench instead of into the workpiece, which shows up as chatter, slippage, and a bench that walks across the floor under enough sawing or filing force. Through-bolt a machinist vise to the benchtop with proper backing washers or a steel plate underneath rather than relying on lag screws into thin plywood — the repeated shock loading from filing and hammering will work lag screws loose over time in a way a through-bolted vise won't. Position it at the front-left or front-right corner of the bench (handedness is personal preference) so long stock can extend past the bench edge without interference, and mount the jaw line at or slightly below elbow height for comfortable filing and sawing posture.
Protecting Work: Jaw Pads and Soft Jaws
Serrated machinist jaws are excellent at holding raw stock and terrible at holding anything with a finished surface — aluminum extrusion, painted parts, threaded rod you don't want marred, or a workpiece you're about to polish. Magnetic jaw pads (rubber or leather-faced, holding onto the steel jaws magnetically) are the fastest fix and come off in seconds when you need full grip back for rough work. For repeat precision work, a set of shop-made soft jaws — aluminum or brass blocks machined or filed to fit over the existing jaws — spreads clamping force more evenly and can be custom-profiled to hold an irregular or round workpiece without the marring or point-loading a flat serrated jaw creates on curved stock.
Maintenance
The vise screw and slide are the only real wear points on a well-built vise, and both are cheap to keep in good condition: keep the Acme screw and the sliding jaw's ways lightly oiled (a general-purpose machine oil is fine — avoid anything gummy that will collect metal filings), and periodically back the jaw all the way open to clean out chips and swarf that accumulate in the screw threads and slide channel. A vise that's stiff or gritty to operate is almost always a maintenance problem, not a sign it needs replacing.
Safety Notes
Clamp only what the vise's rated capacity and your own judgment say is safe — over-torquing a small vise's screw to force it onto oversized stock risks cracking the vise body (cast iron machinist vises are strong in compression but brittle under the wrong load direction) or springing the slide out of alignment. Keep fingers clear of the closing jaw line when tightening, especially on vises with a fast-approach quick-release feature that closes most of the gap in a single lever motion before the fine-thread screw takes over — that quick-close motion has real pinch force behind it.
Most shops eventually end up with more than one vise once the work diversifies past a single material — a machinist vise for metal, a small multi-jaw for electronics, and a woodworking face vise if joinery is part of the shop's regular work. Buying the right type for the job in front of you, rather than making one general-purpose vise do everything, is usually cheaper in the long run than replacing a vise that was wrong for the job from the start.
