Drying Filament Properly — Methods, Times, and Temperatures Wet filament causes: bubbling, stringing, poor layer adhesion, rough surface texture, and snapping. Drying is often the fix before you blame settings. Signs of Wet Filament Popping or crackling sounds during printing Bubbles or rough texture on extruded strands Excessive stringing that doesn't respond to retraction tuning Inconsistent extrusion Filament snapping while feeding Drying Temperatures and Times Caution: Too high = deform the spool. PLA above 55°C risks softening. Always verify spool material rating. Drying Methods Food dehydrator — Best option. Consistent temp, fits multiple spools. Filament dryer (eSun, Sunlu, PrintDry) — Designed for the job. Can print directly from the dryer. Oven — Works but risky. Most ovens fluctuate ±20°C. Check calibration with a thermometer first. Not recommended: Microwave, instant pot, air fryer (uneven heating). Storage After Drying Sealed bags with desiccant (silica gel packets) Vacuum seal bags are better — less air = less moisture exposure Airtight containers with desiccant Recharge desiccant in oven at 120°C for 2 hours when saturated (color-change type tells you when) Hygroscopic Materials Ranked Most to least moisture-sensitive: 1. PA/Nylon (absorbs in hours) 2. PVA (absorbs in minutes when open) 3. TPU 4. PETG 5. ABS/ASA 6. PLA (relatively stable but still benefits from drying)
