The Flipper Zero Mobile App: Bluetooth Pairing, Remote Control, and Managing Your Flipper from Your Phone
Every guide on this site involving the Flipper Zero assumes you're driving it from the device's own screen and buttons, or tethered to a PC over USB via qFlipper. The official Flipper Mobile App (iOS and Android) is mentioned in passing in our getting-started guide as something to install, but its actual capabilities — remote screen control, wireless file transfer, and installing apps from your phone without a computer at all — haven't been covered in any depth. This guide walks through pairing, what the app can and can't do compared to qFlipper, and the workflows it genuinely improves, like managing a Sub-GHz signal library or updating firmware away from your desk.
Pairing Over Bluetooth
- On the Flipper, go to Settings → Bluetooth and confirm it's enabled (it's on by default on recent firmware).
- Install the Flipper Mobile App from the iOS App Store or Google Play.
- Open the app, tap Connect, and select your Flipper from the discovered devices list — it will show up by its device name (default is a randomly generated dolphin-themed name, changeable in Settings → Bluetooth).
- Confirm the pairing code shown on both the phone screen and the Flipper's display match, then accept on the Flipper.
- Once paired, the app remembers the device and reconnects automatically within Bluetooth range on future app launches.
Bluetooth range is modest — expect reliable connection within a normal room, with drop-off through multiple walls or beyond about 10 meters, consistent with BLE range generally.

- Remote screen control: mirror the Flipper's display to your phone and operate it via on-screen buttons — genuinely useful for demoing capture/replay workflows to someone else, or operating the device from a few feet away (mounted in a car dash for a Sub-GHz capture session, for example) without touching the physical buttons.
- Wireless Sub-GHz library management: if you're out in the field capturing signals (the kind of session covered in our Sub-GHz signal-hunting guide), you can browse, rename, and organize captured .sub files from your phone afterward instead of waiting to get back to a computer.
- Installing apps without a laptop: the App Catalog is fully browsable and installable from the phone — handy for adding a new NFC or GPIO app on the go, though note this only surfaces apps in the official catalog, not custom/unofficial builds you'd sideload manually via qFlipper.
- Quick official firmware updates: if you're running stock firmware, the app can pull and apply updates without ever connecting to a PC.
Where the App Falls Short (and qFlipper Wins)
- Custom firmware: Momentum, Unleashed, and RogueMaster all require qFlipper (or manual DFU flashing) — the mobile app only manages official Flipper Devices firmware. If your Flipper already runs custom firmware, expect the mobile app's remote-control features to still generally work, but firmware updates within the app will not.
- Bulk file transfer: moving a large NFC dump library or a big batch of IR files over Bluetooth is noticeably slower than a USB cable to qFlipper. Use USB for anything beyond a handful of files.
- Full backups: for a complete device backup before a firmware change or factory reset, qFlipper's backup/restore is the more complete and reliable path.
Security and Privacy Notes
Bluetooth pairing uses a visible confirmation code on both devices, which prevents a blind pairing attempt from an unauthorized phone nearby, but treat the paired connection like any other Bluetooth peripheral — don't leave Bluetooth enabled and discoverable when you don't need it, particularly since a Flipper carries potentially sensitive captured RFID/NFC/Sub-GHz data. If you're using the Flipper for security testing work (covered elsewhere on this site), be mindful that the mobile app itself becomes another device in the chain that could expose that captured data if your phone is lost or compromised — treat the app's local storage/cache the same as you would any sensitive security tooling data.
Wrapping Up
The Flipper Mobile App isn't a replacement for qFlipper — it's a genuinely useful companion for remote operation, quick file organization, and app installs when you don't have a laptop handy, while custom firmware flashing and bulk transfers still belong on the PC side. Pair it once, and it becomes the natural way to operate the Flipper hands-off or manage captures from the field between desk sessions.
