Building a Table Saw Crosscut Sled and Taper Jig: Precision Jigs for Safer, More Accurate Cuts
A stock table saw fence and miter gauge can rip and crosscut, but almost every accurate, repeatable, or safe cut beyond the basics depends on a shop-built jig. This guide covers the two jigs that do the most for everyday accuracy and safety and aren't shop equipment most people already own: the crosscut sled, which replaces the miter gauge for the majority of everyday crosscuts, and the taper jig, for angled rips that the rip fence alone can't produce safely. Crosscut Sled
A crosscut sled rides in both miter slots on a base of flat plywood or MDF, with a rear fence and a front fence (the "tunnel") that the blade cuts through. It solves two problems the stock miter gauge has: the miter slots on most saws are short enough that a miter gauge only has a few inches of registration, and the miter gauge's small footprint makes wide or awkward panels hard to control safely. A sled gives you full support under the workpiece and a fence long enough to register a straight edge properly.
- Runners: hardwood or UHMW plastic strips sized to slide in the miter slots with almost no play — too tight and the sled binds as it warms up or the wood swells; too loose and every cut inherits slop. Wax the runners and slots for smooth travel.
- Base: 3/4" plywood or MDF, flat and stable. Screw the runners to the underside from below so nothing interferes with the sled's top surface.
- Rear fence: mounted square to the blade's path — this is the single most important alignment step. Use the 5-cut method (cut a square test piece, rotate it through the same fence four times, cut a fifth time, and measure the resulting sliver's taper) to dial the fence to true square before trusting the sled for anything precise.
- Front fence and blade tunnel: the front fence ties the two sides of the sled together across the blade's kerf and gives you a hand grip well clear of the blade path.
- Kerf slot: cut on first use, right through the sled's base and rear fence — this becomes your reference for exactly where the blade will exit, useful for aligning stop blocks later.
Taper Jig
A taper jig lets you rip a workpiece at an angle relative to the blade instead of parallel to it — used for chair legs, wedge shapes, and angled brackets. The two common designs are an adjustable two-arm jig (hinged at one end, with an angle scale or a simple trammel setup to set the taper angle) and a fixed jig built for one specific taper you'll cut repeatedly.
- Set the angle with the workpiece actually clamped in the jig, not just against a protractor — small errors in how the stock sits against the jig's stop compound with the angle setting.
- Always run the jig against the rip fence, never freehand against the blade — the jig's straight edge is what keeps the cut controlled; the workpiece itself is only ever captured by the jig, not touching the fence directly.
- For repeat cuts of an identical taper (four matching chair legs, for example), a fixed-angle jig built for that one job is safer and more consistent than resetting an adjustable jig four times.
Safety
Both jigs are meant to increase your control over the workpiece, not replace guards where they still fit. A crosscut sled is generally used with the blade guard removed, since the sled's fences and tunnel take over the job of controlling the offcut — this makes hand placement discipline more important, not less: never reach across the blade path, and always know where your fingers are relative to the kerf line before the saw is running. Keep push blocks and push sticks within reach for any rip-fence work, including with a taper jig, and never stand directly behind a workpiece being ripped — kickback follows the piece straight back toward the operator.
Building Order
Build the crosscut sled first — it's the highest-value jig for most shops, since it replaces the miter gauge for the majority of everyday crosscuts and immediately improves both accuracy and control over the workpiece. Save the taper jig for when a specific project actually calls for angled rips; there's no reason to build one before you need it.
