Handheld Power Saws for the Maker Shop: Circular Saw, Jigsaw, and Reciprocating Saw Technique

This one fills the gap between them: the handheld circular saw, jigsaw, and reciprocating saw that handle everything those two tools don't — rough breakdown cuts without a rail, curved and internal cutouts, demolition work, and cutting material that's too awkward to bring to a stationary tool at all. These are the saws most makers actually own first, and they're also where a surprising share of shop injuries happen, because their portability makes it easy to get casual with technique that a stationary tool's guarding would otherwise enforce.
Circular Saw: The Rough-Cut Workhorse
A circular saw's job is straight cuts in sheet goods and dimensional lumber without the setup time of a rail or table saw — it's the tool for breaking a full sheet down to roughly manageable pieces before finishing on a table saw or track saw, or for framing and rough carpentry where a die-straight edge doesn't matter as much as speed.

Jigsaw: Curves, Cutouts, and Interior Cuts
Where the circular saw is a straight-line tool, the jigsaw's reciprocating blade earns its place for anything the other saws can't do: curved cuts, interior cutouts (drill a starter hole and plunge in), and thin material where a circular saw's larger blade and higher tooth-engagement speed would tear more than it cuts. Blade selection matters more than technique here — a coarse wood blade will tear plywood veneer badly, while a fine-tooth blade meant for laminate or metal will bog down in thick softwood.
- Orbital action (found on most mid-range and higher jigsaws) adds a slight forward-and-back motion to the blade stroke, cutting faster and more aggressively in wood at the cost of a rougher edge — turn it off for cleaner cuts in plywood, veneer, or anything metal or plastic.
- Let the blade cut at its own pace. Forcing a jigsaw through the material flexes the thin blade, which is the direct cause of a cut that visibly wanders off your line — a jigsaw blade needs less forward pressure than it feels like it wants.
- For tight interior curves, a narrower "scroll" blade turns more easily than a standard blade without binding in the kerf.
Reciprocating Saw: Demolition and Rough Work
A reciprocating saw (commonly known by the DeWalt/Milwaukee trade name "Sawzall") is a demolition and rough-cutting tool first — it's the saw for cutting through a wall stud with a nail buried in it, trimming a pipe in place, or cutting material you can't safely reposition to bring to another tool. It's not a precision saw and shouldn't be treated like one; the blade flexes considerably under load and the tool is designed to be braced against the work rather than guided freehand with fine control.
- Use a metal-cutting blade (finer tooth pitch) any time there's a chance of hidden fasteners in the material — a wood blade hitting a nail at speed can snap or send the blade flying.
- Keep the saw's shoe/foot in firm contact with the work surface — it's there to control blade flex and vibration, not decoration, and cutting without it braced makes the saw noticeably harder to control.
- Plunge cuts (starting a cut mid-material rather than from an edge) require the blade tip to be actively cutting before you tilt the saw down into the material — don't force the flat of the blade into material, which just kicks the saw back at you.
Safety
- Kickback awareness. All three tools can kick back if the blade binds — for the circular saw specifically, never remove or defeat the blade guard, and never reach under material to check clearance while the saw is running or the blade is still spinning down.
- Cord and battery management. A corded saw's cable caught in the cut path is a real hazard — route it behind you and out of the cutting line before starting, and prefer battery tools for overhead or awkward-position cuts where cord management isn't practical.

- Know what's behind the material. This applies most to the reciprocating saw and any plunge cut — a saw doesn't know the difference between the material you're cutting and a wire, pipe, or your own hand on the far side of it. Confirm clearance before every plunge cut, every time, not just the first one.
- Unplug or remove the battery before changing blades on any of these — tool-less blade-change mechanisms make this easy to skip, and it's exactly the moment a saw shouldn't be able to start.
Choosing the Right Tool for the Cut
The overlap between these three (and the table saw and track saw covered elsewhere on this site) trips people up more than the individual tools do. As a rule of thumb: use a track saw or table saw when a straight edge quality actually matters and the material can come to the tool; use a handheld circular saw for rough breakdown before finishing elsewhere, or for cuts on material too big or awkward to move; use a jigsaw for any curve or interior cutout, full stop, since none of the other saws in a typical shop can do that; and reach for the reciprocating saw only when you're cutting material in place that can't be repositioned, or doing genuine demolition work where precision isn't the goal.
None of these three tools requires the setup investment of a track saw system or a table saw fence, which is exactly why they're usually the first power saws a maker shop accumulates — and exactly why it's worth learning their specific technique and hazards deliberately rather than assuming "it's just a saw" carries over cleanly from one to the next.
