Nylon Fabric
Generic / House Brand
Overview
Synthetic polyamide fabric used in outdoor gear, flags, and lightweight bags. CO2 laser cuts cleanly with sealed edges (heat-seals the cut preventing fraying). Important: nylon combustion produces ammonia and HCN — requires full exhaust ventilation. Diode lasers are marginally suitable but CO2 gives cleaner results.

Pros
- Clean laser-cut edges — heat-seals to prevent fraying
- No further edge finishing required
- Cuts complex shapes quickly
- Lightweight and strong
- Water-resistant grades available
- Good for flags and pennants
Cons
- Nylon combustion produces toxic fumes (HCN) — full exhaust mandatory
- Edges melt and may curl
- Limited engraving contrast
- Heat causes edge yellowing on light colors
- Cannot use contact with food after cutting
Best For
- Flags and pennants|Outdoor gear modifications|Bags and pouches|Webbing and straps|Lightweight soft goods
Avoid For
- Food contact|Poor ventilation environments|Engraving applications (minimal contrast)|Natural fiber aesthetics
Storage
Store dry. Standard fabric storage. Nylon degrades slowly with extended UV exposure — store in dark or opaque packaging.
Laser Compatibility
CO2 80W: Cut 20mm/s 40% power. Light engrave: 400mm/s 15%. Edges will melt and seal — this is intentional, prevents fraying. Full exhaust ventilation MANDATORY — nylon produces HCN and ammonia on combustion. Air assist reduces smoke.
