Pros
- Water soluble - no manual support removal
- Excellent support for complex overhangs
- Biodegradable
- Good adhesion to PLA and PETG
- Clean surface finish
Cons
- Extremely hygroscopic
- Expensive
- Slow dissolution time
- Requires dual extruder
- Limited structural strength
- Can clog nozzle if overheated
Best For
- Complex overhangs
- internal cavities
- dissolvable supports
- water-soluble prototypes
Avoid For
- Structural parts
- high-temperature applications
- single-extruder machines
- humid environments without dry storage
Storage
CRITICAL: Store in airtight container with fresh desiccant at all times. PVA absorbs moisture rapidly and becomes unprintable within hours of exposure. Use vacuum-sealed bags.
Laser Compatibility
LASER INTERACTION
Safety: CAUTION — PVA is water-soluble but has specific laser hazards.
Fumes: Polyvinyl alcohol releases acetic acid and acetaldehyde on thermal decomposition. Less toxic than ABS but still irritating.
Note: PVA is typically used as support material and would rarely be laser processed as a finished part. If marking is needed, very low power only.
