Pros
  • No wood grain — machines identically in all directions
  • Holds exceptional detail — better than any wood
  • Dimensionally stable — no warping or moisture movement
  • Can be painted, primed, and epoxy-coated
  • Machines fast and clean — minimal dust vs wood
  • Multiple densities for different applications
  • Can be glued and laminated for large patterns
Cons
  • Expensive — $3-15/board-foot depending on density
  • Not structural
  • Can chip on thin features with aggressive settings
  • Fine dust — good dust collection needed
  • Not temperature resistant above 120°C
  • Cannot be steam bent
Best For
  • Foundry master patterns|Automotive clay model tooling|Architectural and marine patterns|CNC sign carving|Prototype styling bucks|Composite mold masters|Museum replica fabrication
Avoid For
  • Structural parts|Outdoor permanent installation|High-temperature applications|Load-bearing
Storage
Store flat. Seal with spray primer or epoxy after machining to prevent moisture absorption (especially lower densities). Fine dust — use dust collection. Available from specialty plastics distributors.
