Bandsaw Setup and Blade Selection for the Home Shop: Wood, Metal, and Resawing
A bandsaw is one of the most versatile machines in a maker shop and one of the most underused, mostly because it arrives from the factory poorly tuned and with a generic blade that's wrong for most of what you'll actually cut. Once it's set up correctly it does things nothing else in the shop does well: resawing thick stock into thin veneers, cutting curves that a table saw can't touch, ripping stock too irregular to safely push through a table saw fence, and — with the right blade — cutting metal stock for brackets, jigs, and machine parts. This guide covers setup fundamentals and blade selection so the saw actually performs the way it's capable of.
Blade Selection: TPI and Type Drive Everything
The single biggest factor in bandsaw performance is blade choice, and it's the thing most owners never touch after the saw ships with a generic 6 TPI blade that's mediocre at everything. Teeth per inch (TPI) controls cut speed versus finish: fewer teeth cut faster and clear chips better in thick stock, more teeth leave a smoother cut but clog and heat up faster in thick material.

Cutting metal on a wood bandsaw requires either a dedicated metal-cutting bandsaw (horizontal or vertical, geared down to a few hundred feet per minute) or a speed-reduction kit on a wood saw specifically rated for it. Don't feed steel into a stock wood bandsaw at full speed — you'll ruin the blade and possibly damage the saw's guides and tires.
Blade Width and What It Actually Limits
Blade width determines the tightest radius you can cut without binding — a 1/8″ blade can turn a much tighter curve than a 3/4″ blade, but wide blades track straighter and are far less prone to "drift" (wandering off your cut line) when resawing or ripping long, straight cuts. As a rule of thumb: use the widest blade that will still cut the tightest curve in your project. If you're mostly resawing and ripping, run a 1/2″ or wider blade full-time and swap to something narrow only when a project needs tight curves.
Setup: Tension, Tracking, and Guides
A bandsaw that isn't set up correctly will drift, wander, and cut poorly no matter how good the blade is. Three things to check every time you change blades:
- Tension: Most saws have a tension scale on the frame, but scales are notoriously inaccurate across blade widths. The "flex test" is more reliable: with the blade tensioned, push sideways on the blade between the guides — it should deflect about 1/4″ for a properly tensioned blade and no more. Under-tensioned blades wander and cut crooked; over-tensioned blades stress the tires and bearings prematurely.
- Tracking: With the saw unplugged, slowly rotate the upper wheel by hand while adjusting the tracking knob so the blade rides centered on the wheel's crown (most wheels are slightly crowned specifically to center the blade). Blade riding too far forward risks it jumping off the wheel; too far back and the blade rubs the back guide constantly.
- Guides (blocks or bearings): Set both the upper and lower guide assemblies so the side guides just clear the blade (a cigarette-paper gap, roughly 0.003″–0.005″) without touching it when it's not cutting, and the thrust bearing/block sits just behind the blade's gullet, contacting only under cutting load. Guides set too tight overheat and dull the blade; set too loose let the blade wander.
- Blade drift: Even with correct tension and tracking, most blades cut with a slight lead angle ("drift") rather than perfectly parallel to the fence. Cut a test line freehand following a straight pencil mark, then set your fence parallel to the actual cut path the blade wants to take, not to the miter slot. This is the step most new owners skip and the reason their rip cuts wander despite a "square" fence.
Resawing: Where a Bandsaw Does What Nothing Else Can
Resawing — ripping a thick board into thinner slabs, most commonly to make bookmatched panels or thin veneer from a single board — is the bandsaw's signature move. It needs the widest blade your saw's wheels support (3/4″ on most 14″ saws), low TPI (2–3) to clear the deep kerf, maximum tension, and a tall resaw fence or shop-made auxiliary fence to support the full height of the board. Feed slowly and let the blade do the work; forcing the feed rate on a resaw cut is the most common cause of a blade wandering off-line partway through a tall board.
Maintenance
Release blade tension when the saw will sit unused for more than a day or two — leaving a blade under full tension long-term stresses the tires and can cause flat spots. Keep the tires clean of pitch and resin buildup (a rag and mineral spirits works fine), vacuum sawdust out of the lower wheel housing regularly since packed dust throws off tracking, and replace guide bearings or blocks once they develop flat spots or excess play. A well-maintained bandsaw with the right blade for the job will outlast almost anything else in a home shop.
