Build a Rolling Multi-Machine Utility Cart for Your Shop
Anyone running a CNC router, a laser, and a 3D printer in the same shop eventually hits the same friction point: consumables and tools for each machine end up scattered, and walking back and forth to a fixed tool wall between steps of a job wastes real time. A rolling utility cart sized to your actual shop layout — parked next to whichever machine is running, wheeled out of the way when it's not — solves this more cheaply and flexibly than a second workbench, and it's a straightforward beginner build.
Design Decisions Before You Cut Anything
Decide what actually lives on the cart before sizing it: bits and end mills for the CNC, spare nozzles and a hardened-steel nozzle set for the printer, extra lens/mirror cleaning supplies for the laser, a shared roll of blue tape and glue stick, calipers, and a laptop or tablet shelf for pulling up settings references while a job runs. A cart trying to hold everything for every machine gets too heavy and too cluttered to be useful — the better version is a curated, small set of things you reach for constantly, with anything used rarely staying on the wall or in a drawer elsewhere.
Caster Selection
Total weight matters more than most people budget for once you add a shop vac hose reel, a drawer of metal stock, or a small tool chest on top — buy casters rated with real margin over your estimated loaded weight, not the bare minimum, since undersized casters develop flat spots and seized bearings fast under sustained load. Use locking casters on at least the two front corners so the cart stays put next to a running CNC or laser rather than drifting from vibration, and consider swivel-lock (not just wheel-lock) casters if the cart needs to stay square against a machine's edge during use.
Build Steps
Build the base as a simple plywood or MDF box frame (3/4" plywood is a reasonable default for the deck and shelves, with a lighter material acceptable for drawer boxes), sized to roll easily through your shop's narrowest doorway or aisle — measure that constraint before finalizing width. Add a lower shelf close to the casters for heavier items (spare stock, a shop vac canister) to keep the center of gravity low, since a top-heavy cart tips more easily on an uneven floor or when leaned on. Mount a shallow drawer near the top for small consumables that would otherwise slide around an open shelf — heavy-duty drawer slides rated for at least 50lb are worth the few extra dollars over light-duty ones, since drawer contents add up fast.
If the cart will carry a power strip for charging a laptop, running a small fan, or powering a soldering iron nearby, mount the strip vertically on an end panel rather than loose on a shelf, and route its cord through a grommet hole rather than letting it dangle off the edge where it can catch a wheel or get run over.
Cable and Hose Management
If the cart doubles as a mobile dust-collection or air-assist station, add a hook or clip rail on one side specifically for coiling a shop vac hose or air line when not connected — a hose left loose on the deck is both a trip hazard when the cart is parked and a snag risk when it's being rolled. The same goes for any laptop or tablet charging cable kept on the cart; a short cable management channel or a couple of adhesive cable clips keeps things from becoming a tangle you have to sort out every time you want to move the cart.
Finishing
A coat of polyurethane or paint on exposed plywood edges is worth the extra step if the cart lives anywhere near a CNC or sander — raw MDF and plywood edges absorb dust and moisture and degrade faster than a sealed surface in a shop environment. Label drawers and shelves (a laser-engraved or printed label makes this a natural first job for the cart once it's built) so the "curated set of things you reach for constantly" stays organized rather than drifting back into clutter after a few busy weeks.
Safety Notes
Keep the cart's power strip off a GFCI-protected circuit if it's used anywhere near wet processes (rinsing resin prints, cleaning laser optics with isopropyl alcohol) or outdoors. Never overload the top shelf beyond what the casters and frame are rated for just because there's flat space available — a cart that tips while being rolled with a spinning tool or hot iron on top is a real injury risk, not just an inconvenience. Keep the cart's electrical cord fully uncoiled when a plugged-in tool is drawing meaningful current, since a coiled extension cord can heat up under load in a way an uncoiled one won't.
Once it's built and stocked, a cart like this quietly removes a dozen small walks-across-the-shop per project, and because it's mobile rather than fixed, it adapts as your machine layout changes — add a shelf, swap what's stocked on it, or roll it to wherever the next job actually needs it.
