Acrylic Sheet (PMMA)
Generic / House Brand
☀ UV Stable
Overview
Poly(methyl methacrylate) — optically clear thermoplastic with 92% light transmission (versus 90% for glass). Half the weight of glass with 10× the impact resistance. Machines well but generates heat at the cut if feed rate too low — causes melting and re-welding. Polishes to optically clear finish.

Pros
- 92% light transmission — clearer than glass
- Half the weight of glass
- 10× impact resistance of glass
- Polishes to optical clarity with wet sanding + buffing
- Weather and UV resistant — does not yellow
- Easy to heat-bend
- Available in cast (better machining) and extruded (better optical uniformity)
Cons
- Brittle — impact shatters rather than dents
- Scratches easily — needs protective film
- Melts and re-welds if feed rate too low
- Static charge attracts dust
- Cracks at drilled holes without proper technique
- Solvent-sensitive (acetone, MEK cause crazing)
Best For
- Machine guards and safety shields|Display cases and retail fixtures|Light diffusers and light boxes|Signage|Aquariums and terrariums|Architectural glazing|Optical components
Avoid For
- High-impact applications without protective guard|High-temperature exposure (softens at 80-100°C)|Solvent-rich environments|Floor traffic (scratching)|Edge-lit applications without edge polishing
Storage
Store with protective film on both faces. Keep away from acetone, MEK, and aromatic solvents. Remove protective film last — static charge attracts dust. Cast acrylic preferred over extruded for machining (less stress, better chip formation).
