Shapeoko 4 Standard
Buying notes: Carbide 3D Shapeoko 4 Standard
Who it suits
Hobbyists and small-shop users who want a DIY-assembled desktop CNC router for wood, plastics and soft metals. It is a step below Carbide 3D's Pro model, and it accepts standard G-code so other CAM packages work too.
Known issues and quirks
It uses V-wheels rather than linear rails, which All3DP describes as less rigid than the Pro. The 65 mm router mount does not take larger spindles. One forum owner had the Z limit-switch connectors pull apart and fixed it by soldering. Dust collection needs a separate vacuum.
Common upgrades and accessories
A VFD spindle is Carbide 3D's suggested route to more power. A 65 mm trim router such as a Makita works in place of the Compact Router, which is 110V only. Extra clamps and a dust boot are the usual add-ons.
Tips
The MDF waste board can be surfaced flat. Carbide Create and Carbide Motion are included, and VCarve or Fusion 360 also work.
