Adhesives Guide for the Maker Shop: CA Glue, Epoxy, Contact Cement, and What to Use When
Reach for the wrong adhesive and you'll either get a joint that fails in a week or waste twenty minutes waiting on cure time you didn't need to. Every maker shop ends up with a drawer of half-used tubes and bottles — CA glue, some kind of epoxy, a stick of hot glue, maybe a can of spray adhesive — but few makers actually know which one is structurally right for a given pairing of materials versus which one is just "the one that was closest." This guide is a working reference for choosing the right adhesive across the material combinations that come up constantly in 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC routing, and general electronics/workshop builds.

Acrylic to Acrylic
Don't reach for CA glue or epoxy as your default here — acrylic solvent cement (often called "weld-on" cement) actually dissolves and fuses the plastic at the joint, producing a bond as strong as the parent material and, done well, nearly invisible. It's the right choice for laser-cut acrylic boxes and enclosures. CA glue works as a fast tack for holding pieces during solvent welding or for small non-structural details, but it will show as a visible glue line and is more brittle than a proper solvent weld.
3D Printed Parts (PLA, PETG, ABS)
CA glue (gel formula) bonds PLA and PETG well and sets in seconds, which makes it the default for joining small printed parts. ABS is the exception — acetone actually softens and fuses ABS surfaces (the same chemistry behind vapor smoothing), so an acetone slurry or acetone-thinned ABS "glue" gives a stronger, more seamless bond than CA glue on ABS-to-ABS joints. For larger structural printed assemblies, 2-part epoxy outperforms CA glue on any of these materials — it's more gap-filling and less brittle under flex.
Wood to Wood
PVA wood glue is simply better than any other adhesive on this list for wood joinery — it's stronger than the wood itself in a properly clamped, long-grain joint, cheap, and easy to clean up. Reach for CA glue only for quick tacking during glue-up (holding a joint while clamps go on) or for end-grain/porous woods where PVA alone doesn't get enough working time. Epoxy is worth it specifically when you're filling gaps (a loose joint, a knot void) that PVA's poor gap-filling can't handle.
Metal to Metal, or Metal to Anything Else
Structural epoxy is the general-purpose answer here — it bonds to clean, lightly-abraded metal well and its cure time gives you working time to align parts. CA glue works for very small, tight-fitting metal parts (jewelry-scale work) but is brittle and a poor choice under any vibration or repeated flex. For load-bearing metal joints that will see real stress, mechanical fastening (screws, rivets) plus adhesive as a secondary seal is more reliable than adhesive alone.
Foam, Rubber, and Flexible Materials (EVA foam, gaskets, cosplay builds)
Contact cement is the standard here — it stays flexible after cure, unlike CA glue or epoxy, which will crack a flexible foam or rubber joint under the first real flex. Apply to both surfaces, let it flash off to tacky (not wet) per the product's instructions, then press together — the bond is near-instant once the surfaces touch, so alignment has to be right the first time.
Fixturing and Workholding (CNC/laser sacrificial layers)
CA glue plus painter's tape (glue on the tape, tape on the workpiece and spoilboard) is the standard hobby-CNC workholding trick for small parts — it holds firmly during machining and releases cleanly with a chisel or flex once the job's done. Safety and Handling
- CA glue bonds skin almost instantly — keep acetone or a dedicated CA debonder nearby, and never try to force-pull bonded skin apart (soak and gently peel instead). CA fumes also irritate eyes and airways in enclosed spaces; work with some ventilation.
- Epoxy resins are a common skin sensitizer — repeated bare-skin contact can develop into a genuine allergy over time even in people who tolerated it fine at first. Wear nitrile gloves as a default habit, not just when your skin reacts.
- Polyurethane glues contain isocyanates before cure and expand significantly as they foam — use in ventilated spaces and clamp firmly, since the expansion can push joints apart if not restrained.
- Contact cement and many spray adhesives are highly flammable while wet and release strong solvent vapors — no open flames or sparks nearby (this matters if your bench is near a laser, CNC spindle, or soldering station), and ventilate well.
- Dispose of empty adhesive containers and mixing cups per your local hazardous/household waste guidance — cured epoxy and CA glue residue are inert once fully hardened, but uncured product and solvent-based adhesives generally shouldn't go straight into general trash in most areas.
Storage and Shelf Life
CA glue is the most perishable item on this list — an opened bottle thickens and eventually gels within weeks to a few months even capped, faster in humid environments; refrigerating an unopened bottle extends shelf life meaningfully. Two-part epoxies last years unopened but the hardener component can discolor or thicken with age — always do a small test mix if a bottle's been sitting more than a year or two. Contact cement and polyurethane glues both have a real shelf life once opened (polyurethane reacts with ambient moisture even in the "sealed" bottle over time) — buy the size you'll actually use within a year rather than the bulk jug.
None of these adhesives is universally "best" — the right call depends entirely on the materials you're joining, whether the joint needs to flex, and how much working time you need for alignment. Keep this guide near the bench, and when in doubt on an unfamiliar pairing, test the bond on scrap before committing to your actual workpiece.
