Hearing Protection and Noise Control in a Maker Shop: Router, CNC, and Shop-Vac Noise Levels
Eye protection and dust masks get talked about constantly in maker spaces; hearing protection almost never does, which is backwards given how much time a lot of us spend next to a screaming router bit or a shop vac running for an hour-long CNC job. Hearing damage from noise exposure is cumulative and permanent — unlike a cut or a burn, you usually don't notice it happening, you just notice years later that you're asking people to repeat themselves. This guide covers what actually gets loud in a typical maker shop, how to measure it, and how to pick protection that matches the exposure instead of just grabbing whatever earplugs are on the shelf.

Measuring Your Own Shop
- Use a phone-based dB meter app (they're not lab-grade accurate, but they're within a few dB of a real meter and good enough to know if you're in dangerous territory) or a cheap dedicated dB meter (~$20–$30) for more consistent readings.
- Measure at ear height, at your actual working position — not standing right next to the machine, but where your head is when you're running it.
- Take readings during actual cutting/routing, not just machine idle, since load noise is usually significantly louder than idle noise.
- If you're consistently seeing 85dB+ for sustained periods, that's the OSHA action level where hearing protection stops being optional.

Reducing Noise at the Source
- Isolate your shop vac or dust collector in a separate small closet or an outbuilding with ducting run to the work area — distance and a door between you and the motor helps more than almost anything else.
- Box in an air compressor with a ventilated, lined enclosure rather than letting it sit exposed in the room; sound-dampening foam and mass-loaded vinyl liners are inexpensive and effective for this.
- Keep spindle/router RPM in the manufacturer's efficient range for the bit and material — running faster than necessary is often louder without cutting any better.
- Add rubber isolation feet or mats under vibrating equipment; a lot of shop noise is structure-borne vibration transmitted through a bench or floor, not just airborne sound.
Warning Signs
Ringing in your ears after a shop session (tinnitus) is your hearing telling you it was overloaded, even if it fades after a few hours — repeated episodes are a sign of accumulating damage, not a normal cost of doing the hobby. Difficulty understanding speech in noisy environments, needing the TV louder than people around you, or a persistent dull "underwater" feeling after a long CNC or router session are all worth taking seriously. Hearing loss from noise exposure doesn't come back; prevention is the only real treatment.
None of this requires expensive gear — a $20 pair of quality earmuffs worn consistently will do more for your long-term hearing than any amount of after-the-fact regret. Keep a pair hanging next to the CNC and the shop vac switch so there's zero friction to putting them on before you hit start.
