Color-Filling Laser-Engraved Signs and Plaques: Enamel, Epoxy, and Paint Techniques
Our Fill+Line mode guide covers the software side of getting clean engraved fills in LightBurn, and the CNC side of this site covers paint-filling and gilding V-carved signs — but laser engraving produces a genuinely different surface than a V-carved groove, and the color-filling technique needs to account for that difference. This guide covers physically filling laser-engraved text, logos, and line art with paint, enamel, or epoxy for a durable, professional two-tone result on wood, acrylic, and painted/anodized metal.
Why Laser-Engraved Fill Is a Different Job Than V-Carve Fill
A V-carve groove is a consistent, machined V-shaped channel with a defined depth and a clean wall angle — paint pools predictably and levels off cleanly at the surface. A laser-engraved recess is shallower, has a textured (often slightly charred, on wood) surface rather than a smooth machined wall, and the depth is far more sensitive to power/speed settings and number of passes than to a toolpath depth parameter. That texture is actually useful — it gives fill material more surface area to key into — but it also means fill technique needs to account for a rougher, shallower cavity rather than a clean machined pocket.
Preparing the Engraving for Fill
- Engrave with fill depth in mind, not just visual contrast. A single light pass optimized for a clean-looking burn may not be deep enough to hold paint reliably — for anything you intend to fill, run 2-4 passes (or a single deeper pass at reduced speed) to get a recess with real depth, typically 0.3-0.5mm minimum for paint, more for epoxy fills that need to survive handling and flexing.
- Clean out char and soot before filling. On wood especially, laser engraving leaves loose soot and char debris in the recess — vacuum it out and wipe with a slightly damp cloth (let it dry fully before filling), since fill material bonding to loose char instead of solid wood underneath will flake out over time.
- Mask the surrounding surface if using anything thinner than a careful hand-fill technique. Painter's tape or transfer tape over the surface, engraved before or after masking depending on your workflow, keeps overspray or excess fill material off the surrounding surface and dramatically speeds up cleanup.

- Apply fill material generously, slightly overfilling the recess. This gives you material to work with during leveling and accounts for shrinkage in materials that cure with volume loss (most paints, some epoxies).
- Level or scrape once partially set (paint) or use the epoxy's natural self-leveling (resin). For paint, a squeegee or old gift card dragged across the surface at a low angle pushes excess fill off the raised surface and into the recess rather than smearing it around — timing matters here; too wet and you'll drag fill out of the recess, too dry and it won't level cleanly.
- Full cure before final sanding. Sanding a fill that isn't fully cured smears rather than cleanly removes the excess on the surrounding surface — follow the fill material's actual cure time, not how solid it feels to a light touch.
- Final sand and finish. A fine-grit sanding block (400-600 grit) removes any remaining haze or overspray from the raised surface without digging into the fill itself, followed by whatever clear finish the base material calls for (see our wood finishing guide for wood signs, or a acrylic-safe polish for acrylic pieces).
Material-Specific Notes
- Wood. The char layer from laser engraving actually helps epoxy and paint adhesion by giving the fill material texture to grip — don't sand the recess itself smooth before filling, only clean out loose debris.
- Acrylic. Engrave on the back of clear or cast acrylic for a fill that's protected under the surface once the piece is flipped — this is the same second-surface technique covered in our laser guides for control panels, applied here for a durable, scratch-resistant filled design rather than a clear industrial marking.
- Anodized aluminum. Laser engraving on anodized aluminum typically removes the anodized layer down to bare metal in the engraved area already, producing natural two-tone contrast without fill in many cases — fill is worth adding mainly for bold, deliberately colored logos rather than as a necessity.
Safety
Two-part epoxy and many enamel paints involve solvent fumes and skin-sensitizing components — work in a ventilated space, wear nitrile gloves, and follow the specific product's safety data sheet, particularly for epoxy resin work where uncured resin is a known skin sensitizer with repeated contact. Color-filled laser engraving turns a single-tone burned design into something that reads as a genuinely finished, professional product — the technique itself is simple, but getting a fill that survives years of handling instead of flaking out within months comes down entirely to engraving deep enough, cleaning the recess properly, and respecting each fill material's actual cure time before you sand it flush.
