Paint-Filling and Gilding V-Carved CNC Signs: Enamel Fill, Gold Leaf, and Sealing Techniques
Every V-carve sign guide on this site so far stops at the cut — toolpaths, bit selection, depth control. But the difference between a sign that looks like a raw plywood cutout and one that looks like it came from a professional sign shop is almost entirely in the finishing: paint fill in the carved letters, and for higher-end work, gilding with real or composition gold leaf. Both techniques are well within reach of a desktop CNC router like the Wolfpawn 4040 Pro, and neither requires specialized equipment beyond what most makers already have on a workbench. This guide covers enamel paint fill, gilding, and the sealing steps that keep either finish looking good for years outdoors.
Why Fill At All
A V-carved letter is a shadow line cut into the material — on light-colored wood or painted MDF, the recess reads as a subtle shadow that's easy to miss from a distance or in flat lighting. Filling the carved recess with a contrasting color (paint) or a reflective one (metal leaf) turns that shadow into a crisp, legible mark that reads clearly at a distance, which is the entire point of a sign. It also protects the exposed end grain and cut fibers inside the carved recess from moisture, which matters a lot for anything going outdoors.
Preparing the Carved Sign for Fill
- Sand the face of the sign before filling, not after — sanding after fill will smear soft paint or damage leaf, and any dust generated will contaminate wet fill material.
- Vacuum and blow out the carved recesses thoroughly. Dust and chips left in the bottom of a V-carve will show through thin paint and will absolutely wreck adhesion for gilding size.
- If the background field (the flat, uncarved area) will be painted a different color than the fill, paint and fully cure that background color first, then fill the letters second — filling first means you'll be masking carved recesses while painting the field, which is far more fiddly than the reverse order.
- For porous woods (pine, some plywoods), consider a thinned sanding sealer or shellac wash coat on the whole face before painting — it keeps the wood from soaking up inconsistent amounts of paint and causing blotchy color depth between letters.
Enamel Paint Fill
Paint fill is the simpler, more durable, and far more common approach for everyday signage.
- Mask the field if you're filling a different color than the background — painter's tape or a laser-cut/vinyl stencil over the flat areas keeps overspray or brush strokes contained to the carved recesses.
- Apply enamel paint into the recesses. A small squeeze bottle, a foam brush, or (for larger production runs) a paint pen designed for recessed lettering all work. Overfill slightly — paint shrinks as it cures and you want the recess fully flooded, not just coated on the walls.
- Let it cure fully per the paint's data sheet before the next step — rushing this is the most common cause of a smeared, ruined fill.
- Sand the field flush. Once cured hard, sand the overfilled paint back flush with the surrounding surface using a random orbital sander or a sanding block, working through progressively finer grits. This is the step that turns a sloppy-looking flood fill into a crisp, professional line — the paint that remains is only what sits inside the carved recess.
- Clean and inspect. Wipe away sanding residue and check for any pinholes or thin spots in the fill; touch up and re-sand if needed before sealing.
Exterior-rated enamel (oil-based sign enamel, or a quality acrylic urethane) holds up far better outdoors than interior craft paint, which will chalk and fade within a season or two of UV exposure.
Gilding with Gold Leaf
Gilding is more labor-intensive but produces a genuinely different look — a metallic, reflective fill rather than a flat color, which is the traditional finish for high-end carved signage, memorial plaques, and gallery-quality work.
- Composition leaf (a brass/zinc alloy, often called "Dutch metal" or imitation gold leaf) is inexpensive and looks convincingly like gold from normal viewing distance, but it will tarnish over time unless properly sealed — the right choice for most maker projects and for anything indoors.
- 23k genuine gold leaf doesn't tarnish at all and is the standard for professional exterior gilded signage, but costs significantly more and is more delicate to work with — reserve it for pieces where the extra cost and durability are justified.
- Apply gilder's size (a slow-drying adhesive made for leaf) into the carved recesses with a small brush, staying inside the lines as cleanly as you can.
- Wait for the size to reach tack — most sizes cure to a specific tacky-but-not-wet state (often 1-24 hours depending on the product) that's the correct window for laying leaf; too wet and the leaf sinks and dulls, too dry and it won't adhere at all. Test with a light fingertip touch on scrap size in the same conditions.
- Lay the leaf over the sized area, pressing gently through the leaf's tissue backing with a soft brush to seat it into the recess, working from one edge across.
- Burnish and remove excess ("skewing off"). Once the leaf has bonded, a soft brush sweeps away the loose excess leaf (called skewings, often saved and reused on future small areas) and burnishing brings up the shine.
- Seal composition leaf with a dedicated leaf sealer or a thin coat of clear lacquer — this step is not optional for Dutch metal leaf going outdoors, since unsealed composition leaf will tarnish within weeks of weather exposure. Genuine gold leaf doesn't strictly need a sealer for tarnish protection but a light seal coat still helps with abrasion resistance.
Final Sealing
Regardless of fill method, an exterior sign benefits from a full-face clear topcoat once the fill is cured and sanded — spar urethane for wood signs, or a UV-stable clear coat for painted MDF/HDU. This protects both the field finish and the fill edges from moisture intrusion at the wood grain, which is where most outdoor sign failures actually start.

- Sand only after paint or size has fully cured, and use dust collection or a mask — sanding partially-cured enamel or leaf sizing generates a gummy dust that's unpleasant to breathe and can clog a shop vac filter.
- Gilder's size and lacquer sealers are often solvent-based; work in a ventilated area and store rags away from other flammables, following the same solvent storage practices used elsewhere in the shop.
- Composition leaf dust (from skewings and burnishing) is a minor respiratory irritant in quantity — work over a drop cloth and avoid stirring it into the air unnecessarily.
Paint fill and gilding are finishing skills more than CNC skills, and that's exactly why they're worth learning separately from the toolpath and V-carve settings already covered elsewhere on this site — a technically perfect carve with a sloppy fill still looks amateur, while even a modest carve depth reads beautifully once it's properly filled, sanded flush, and sealed. Practice the fill-and-sand sequence on scrap cutoffs before committing to a finished sign; it's a technique that rewards a few dry runs more than it rewards reading about it.
