High-power diode lasers (20W+) are Class 4 devices, meaning the reflected beam can cause instant and permanent eye damage, and the fumes generated can be highly toxic.
Industrial Safety Checklist (1C3D standard)
1. Enclosure: Never operate without a certified laser-safe enclosure. (Acrylic panels must be rated OD6+ at the laser wavelength, 450nm for diodes). 2. Interlocks: Implement magnetic interlocks on the enclosure door (connected via the 1C3D API). 3. PPE: Use OD6+ safety glasses. 4. Fume Extraction: Install active ventilation (minimum 100 CFM) that vents outdoors to a dedicated filtration stack. 5. Fire Safety: Always have a CO2 fire extinguisher near the machine (avoid dry chemical, which ruins electronics). Do not leave active lasers unattended.
