Making a Dust Shoe for the Wolfpawn 4040 Pro A dust shoe connects your shop vac to the spindle and collects chips at the source. It's the single best quality-of-life upgrade for the Wolfpawn. Why a Dust Shoe Matters Without dust collection: chips recut (dulls bits faster), MDF dust everywhere (toxic), visibility of cut is zero. With dust shoe: 80–90% chip collection, longer bit life, visible cut, cleaner shop. Design Requirements Fits around the spindle body without restricting movement Bristle or brush seal at the bottom to contain dust Hose connection (typically 1.5" or 2.5" shop vac hose) Z-clearance: enough room for the bit plus some material thickness Materials Body: 3D printed (PETG for durability, PLA works for light use) Seal: cheap craft brush strips from the dollar store, or replacement window seal brush strip Hose adapter: 3D printed or bought PVC fitting Mount: clamp around spindle body or bolted to Z axis plate Building One 1. Measure your spindle OD (Wolfpawn: ~52mm typically) 2. Find or design a dust shoe to fit on Thingiverse/Printables 3. Print in PETG (chips are hot, PLA softens) 4. Cut brush strip to fit perimeter 5. Hot glue brush to bottom of shoe 6. Attach hose fitting 7. Mount — ensure it moves with Z but doesn't restrict travel Shop Vac Connection A basic shop vac works. For better results: Add a cyclone separator between vac and shoe — keeps filter clean Thien baffle cyclones are cheap and effective Dust Deputy is a commercial option Adjust for Different Operations Lower brush seal for pockets and flat cuts. Raise or remove for tall workpieces. Some designs allow the brush to float on springs.
