Multi-Tool Workbench Layout (Printer + Laser + CNC)
Core Principle: Separate by Contamination Type
The single biggest layout mistake is putting a CNC router (produces fine dust constantly) right next to a 3D printer (needs a relatively clean, stable-temperature environment) or a laser (needs ventilation and a clear path for fumes/smoke away from anything else). Group by what each tool puts into the air, not just by available floor space.
3D Printer Zone
- Away from direct airflow/drafts — open windows, fans, or AC vents blowing across an FDM printer causes layer adhesion problems and warping, especially with ABS/ASA
- Stable ambient temperature matters more than most people expect — a corner away from exterior walls if you're in a variable-temperature garage/shed
- Enclosed printers are far more forgiving of a suboptimal room environment than open-frame printers — factor this into placement flexibility
Laser Zone
- Must have a clear, short path to outside ventilation — a laser fume extractor with ducting to a window or through-wall vent, not just a fan blowing fumes around the room
- Keep flammable material storage (extra wood/acrylic sheet stock) away from the actual cutting area, not stacked next to the machine
- A dedicated fire extinguisher (Class ABC minimum) within arm's reach, always — this isn't optional for laser work
CNC Zone
- Ideally its own semi-enclosed area or at minimum a dust shield/curtain — CNC dust travels far and settles on everything, including your printer's precision rails and lasers' optics
- Dust collection ducting run to this zone specifically, not a shared system that also serves the other tools' airspace
- Solid, vibration-damped mounting — CNC router vibration transmitted through a shared workbench affects precision on anything else bolted to the same bench
Shared Infrastructure Worth Planning For
- A dedicated 240V circuit if any tool needs it (see the shop wiring guide) — don't retrofit this after everything's placed
- A central dust collection system with blast gates, if running CNC — ducting layout should be planned before final tool placement, not around it
- Good, adjustable task lighting at each zone independently — overhead lighting alone leaves shadows exactly where you need to see (bit changes, material alignment)
A Practical Layout Pattern
If space allows: laser and CNC on opposite walls (both need ventilation/dust paths, but keep their debris zones separate), 3D printer in the calmest corner away from both, with a general workbench/assembly area in the middle serving all three. Corridor width between stations matters more than people plan for — you need room to load material, not just stand at the control panel.
