What Is Second-Surface Engraving
Second-surface engraving means engraving the back face of a transparent material so the engraving is viewed through the material from the front. The smooth top surface protects the engraved area from scratching and wear indefinitely.
Why Use It for Control Panels
Control panel labels engraved on the front surface wear off. Second-surface engraving can't wear off because it's sealed behind the material. A 3mm clear acrylic panel with second-surface engraving can last the life of the machine with no visible degradation.
Design Considerations
Mirror all text and graphics horizontally before engraving — you're engraving the back, so the design must be flipped to read correctly from the front. In LightBurn use Edit → Mirror → Horizontal.
Material
Cast acrylic engraves with a frosted, white appearance — high contrast against the clear background. For control panels, use 3mm cast acrylic.
Filling Engraving
With the material face-down, apply paint to the engraved back surface, let cure, then sand flush. White paint on black engraving gives best contrast. The paint is permanently protected behind the acrylic face.
Mounting
Mount with standoffs rather than flat against the surface to allow panel replacement. Countersink mounting holes on the front face to maintain the smooth surface.
