Selecting Laser-Compatible Plywood
Why Hardware Store Plywood Fails
Construction plywood uses formaldehyde-based adhesives that produce toxic fumes when laser cut and cause excessive char, inconsistent cuts, and voids that deflect the beam unpredictably. Internal voids and knots mean settings that work at one spot fail two inches away.
What to Look For
- Void-free core — no air pockets causing incomplete cuts
- Consistent density — same power settings work across the whole sheet
- Low-formaldehyde or formaldehyde-free adhesive
- Smooth, consistent face veneer
Species Comparison
Baltic birch: The benchmark. Dense, consistent, void-free from quality suppliers. Cuts clean and engraves high contrast. 3mm and 6mm are most common.
Poplar: Softer than birch, less engraving contrast. Very consistent. Good for structural parts.
Maple: Hard and dense — cuts slower but engraves with exceptional detail. Best for fine decorative work.
Alder: Similar to poplar with a warmer color tone. Good for decorative and gift items.
Starting Power Settings
On a 10W diode laser for Baltic birch: 3mm at 600mm/s 85% power (1 pass); 6mm at 300mm/s 90% power (2 passes). Always run a material test first.
