Selecting Optimal Plywood for Laser Cutting and Engraving
The Trap of Big-Box Plywood
Not all plywood is laser-compatible. Plywood from home centers often uses exterior-grade glues that absorb laser energy, leading to excessive charring, inconsistent cuts, and hazardous fumes.
What to Look For
1. Glue Type: Specify 'Laser Grade' or interior plywood made with urea-formaldehyde glue (MR-grade). Exterior plywood uses phenol-formaldehyde (WBP) glue, which is too tough. 2. Core Quality: Baltic Birch or specialized 'laser ply' has no internal voids. Cheaper plywood has air pockets that prevent consistent through-cuts. 3. Thickness Consistency: Verify your 3mm ply is not actually 3.2mm, which can throw off focal distance.
